I have a ltr that I'm going to bed and I have a big tin of meguiars mold release wax that I used to bed the badger base which came out good, should I use this type of wax to bed the action or should I stick with kiwi neutral wax?

Re: release agents

Ive used paste wax and Pam cooking spray before and I just bedded a 10/22 yesterday and tried the shoe polish. I have to say it worked better than the other two. Didnt have any trouble getting the action out. Didnt have to pop it with the bottom of my hand or anything, just lifted right out. Im gonna stick with it till something better comes along.

Re: release agents

I've always used the Kiwi neutral paste wax. It has always done good for me. I apply 1 coat and let it dry then buff it off. Then apply a second coat and let it dry to a haze. I leave that.

But it's your rifle, your money and you that has to be satisfied with the results.

Good luck

Re: release agents

Victor, I do the same except I buff off the second coat also. That way there is nothing between the bedding compound and the receiver when its setting. I have yet to have an action stick.

Re: release agents

To each his own. That's why they make more than one product. I just really like it when I can see that haze before everything goes together.

I'm sure that you're right. Just that's the way I was taught. And that's the way I have done it ever since. You're not wrong & I'm not right. Both ways work.

Victor, I wasnt trying to say your way was wrong, hell my way isnt even mine, I got it off of 6mmbr.com I was just stating another way of doing it.

+1... I was just agreeing with you. The main thing is that if it works, it works. Just another way of doing things.

Re: release agents

I use two types, one is a wax only made for use with epoxies, the other a wax and then spray or paint pva film. The film releases from the wax when demoulding. I prefer these professional systems especially as I always heat cure in an oven.

Re: release agents

I used to use the Brownells' Accra Release, but was out and did not want to wait for Big Brown to deliver a can before I bedded a rifle. The Kiwi was available and I went with it. I have never looked back. Like Victor and others have said, it goes on thin and is cheap. For the action screws, though, I dunk them deep in a can of Johnson's wax.

Re: release agents

I use a couple different things, Accra Release most of the time because it works and is quick. If I'm out of that I use a regular mould release wax that I got from Score High when I started using their bedding compound.

Re: release agents

that's innovative. i also ran out,the last remaining dried up. as i looked up i spied a tube of Lee's sizing compound on the shelf which i used with very good results.it was a no brainer to use. it has worked in couple buildup repairs requiering use of glass bedding compound. be careful of thickness of application (as a thin coat is effective)may affect dimensional measurements resulting in unwanted play. try Lee's sizing stuff in noncritical uses and see if it is 4 you, thus, expanding usage of one item while saving purchase price of another, if you run out. other simular products probably work as well. keep your powder dry.

Re: release agents

Polyvinyl Acetate mold release agent, usually available at plastic supply distributers.

Stoner Xero Stick E342, very thin spray, food quality. Used it when I was an Injection Blowmoding Machine Tech. Still keep a can for that odd application.

Re: release agents

Started out using the brush on release agent, and have since switched to Johnson's paste wax and been much happier. Haven't tried kiwi neutral but everyone seems to like it as well.
