I have been handloading for .308 for sometime now, but I am building an AR and had a question on reloading the .223. I took one round apart and it had disk powder in it. I use varget for the .308, can I use the varget for the .223?

Re: reloading .223 for AR

Yes sir, I use varget for my AR with 23.5g of varget and a 75g hornady match pill. I have used it on 55g fmjs and does good with that too. I was shooting moa with the 75's and 2moa with the 55 grainers with an A2 bushmaster non free floating barrel.

Re: reloading .223 for AR

In the 4, .223s I own, Varget is one of the best powders for bullets weighing 60 grains, or heavier, as far as accuracy, but, I've never had much luck with it when using the lighter bullets.

If you're using a progressive press, you might want to take a look at Tac, it meters like water, and from what testing I've done so far, accuracy, and velocity is similar to Varget, but, according to the data, it has a higher chamber pressure.

Re: reloading .223 for AR

Varget works great in both .223 and even 308 AR platforms. I have used it many times.
The only problem is that it doesn't run through my powder measure very well. That is why I prefer ball powder for loading a large volume of rounds.

Re: reloading .223 for AR

My favorites for the 223 are H335 for 55gr bullets, H322 & Varget for 68gr+ bullets.

Re: reloading .223 for AR

Varget and Benchmark are great powders for the 223. Mine loves 24 - 24.5 grains of Benchmark over 55 grain Blitzkings.

Re: reloading .223 for AR

I use Varget or IMR4064. They burn sbout the same but 4064 takes up a little more case volume.

Re: reloading .223 for AR

I share varget between 223 and 308. It is the only rifle powder Ive ever tried, the results I have gotten have been acceptable from each so I didn't try anything else.

Re: reloading .223 for AR

Varget has given me my most consistent 77 grain 223 loads 24-24.5 and a mild primer like CCI reg you can't go wrong. Seat to whatever length you want I seat everything to 2.25 to make sure that it feeds 100%.

After that AA2230 and IMR4320 for varmint loads.

Re: reloading .223 for AR

I running Nosler 55 grain H335 24.3 grains LC brass CCI 400 small rifle primers 2.260 COL.

Shoots 1.5 to 2 MOA in my H-Bar 20" non free floating w/ 4x ACOG.

Re: reloading .223 for AR

Like the posts above, Varget works very well in 223. Also, try Reloader 15. It is slightly more foregiving when metered.

Re: reloading .223 for AR

Just to add another powder to the mix - I use Accurate Arms 2460 at 25 grains on my 223 - 2.260 COAL. I am in the process of getting a 223 bolt rifle made and see how I can get 2460 to work. I will also try some Varget too.

23.5 in LC brass 2.25 77nosler and 24+69nosler were my loads for 223, both were really accurate. 23.5 was still making supersonic cracks at 600 out of my 18. You can also use it in a 308 & 30-06 garand.

Unfortunately when I went to buy more a month back I was told that there were importation problems (it comes from Belgium).
