Reloading .45-70

Hey guys, is anyone running H4831 in a .45-70 Marlin 1895 Cowboy?

i have load data for IMR 3031 but wanted to know if anyone runs H4831. i've been told by a lot of .45-70 shooters that the longer barrel Cowboy likes a slower burning powder.

The 4831 is way too slow. Depending, of course, on your bullet weight; but your OAL is limited by the ejection port. You will have lots of unburned granules in your barrel. I found my best powder to be 4198. In my rifle 4895 was too slow. 3031 may be good to go in the long barrel. JMHO

+1 on the 4198. I have loaded several hundred rounds using 4198 and the 300gr. Remington component bullet. This was for the Marlin 1895 with standard barrel. AG

I have used 4198 and 3031 in my Marlin 1895 45/70 with 405 grain hard cast bullets.

But for real fun try about 63 grains of black powder(FFG or FFFG) behind a 405 grain cast black powder lubed bullet. That is more like a Cowboy load.

I like RL7 in my 45-70's. RL7 gives decent case fill, and good burn. What worries me the most is lube on cast bullets in the longer barrel. Tom.

i don't plan on shooting cast lead, i will be running mostly 350 grn semi jacketed round nose.

Personally I like RL-7 in my 1895. It's been a very versatile powder for me....loading up powder puff loads to hot bear stopper loads. I found that it burns completely and is very clean. I shoot mostly cast 405's 420's and 480's.
