I do know not to shoot 5.56 in a .223 gun

Short answer yes. However not many powder manufacturers publish 5.56 load data. Ramshot does but most others don't to the best of my knowledge

The Hornady manual has data for it.
Dimensionally, the two rounds are the same. The difference is on the chamber throat

Yes you can. As mentioned above they are dimensionally the same.
