I am going to start reloading hunting loads for 30-06 out of a remington 700. I currently use varget for 308 and 223 so it would be nice to use the varget for 30-06 too so I only have to stock 1 powder. Does anybody have any experience or opinion with varget for 30-06, is the a major reason I shouldn't use it, or is there a better powder that would would blow the varget out of the water.

thanks, Jim

Re: reloading powder for 30-06

I have used Varget in the 30-06 for target purposes and it worked okay with the 155 grain sierra HPBT bullet, not great results but not bad either(about 1 moa groups at 265 yards), I have since moved on to another powder. There are better powders for the 06’ but it’s hard to pick just one without knowing exactly what you want to accomplish. What are you planning to hunt and what projectiles are you planning on using; Varget is a quicker powder and will work better with the lighter bullet weights and give up a fair bit of velocity to the slower powders on the heavy projectiles so it all depends on what you want to accomplish.

I'm actually having the best luck with 56g of Win760 under a 150g Ballistic Silvertip. I am getting excellent results in a Rem 700BDL 30-06.

edt: I tried H4350 initially and W760 on a whim. 760 won to my surprise.

Re: reloading powder for 30-06

I shoot an M1 Garand so I load my 30-06 to the parameters of its gas system IMR 4064, IMR 4895, VV 135 and Varget are the powders that fit that rifle. I am a newer reloader, still testing for my final load, and made some changes in my process this time around that made any other data I had null and void.

I really like how the Hornady M1 30-06 loads shoot in both my M1 and my 1903. My research (based on one of their employees statements) indicates they load 46.5 of Varget under a 168 AMAX. These rounds loaded with Varget are the issue match ammo by CMP at Camp Perry. It is highly regarded by the shooters of mil surp cross course shooters as well as those shooting vintage sniper. Hornady loads to about 3.25 COAL for their ammo with the 168 AMAX. Buy a box of this ammo and give it a try to see if Varget is the way you want to go. You should be about 2700 FPS with this ammo.

I have had really good luck with 46.5 of IMR 4895 in my 1903 and it looks promising in my M1.

A friend gave me 10 rounds of 30-06 loaded with 56.5 grns of RL 19 that I fired through my 1903. It grouped better than anything else Ive ever shot so much so I doubted I was pulling the trigger.

I only shoot paper and use bullets that are terminal on paper only. Your requirements will need some more thought.

Absolutely. The two go together like peanut butter and jelly in a sandwich.
