That works best in my 700 varmint!

Yep... master wind and mirage reading. That's the recipe.

Generally speaking I agree that the 175 or 178 grain bullets are the best option to stretch the useful range of the .308Win with a typical length (22"-26") barrel past 800-900 yards.

That said every barrel is a little bit different and AMAX168s are working very well for me from a factory barreled 24" Remington 700. At 2,750FPS(chrono'd) the AMAX168s are shooting about 1(one) mil rad flatter than a 2,615FPS(chrono'd) SMK175 at 1,000 yards. I have not managed to get the AMAX178s to work as well as the AMAX168 or SMK175s probably the result of a long Remington throat that is getting very tired. I could never get SMK190s to work for me even when the barrel was new, maybe it was the factory 1:12 twist barrel? I have not had a chance to try a load using the new Hornady Match 178grain bullets but they look promising.

I can't say about Lapua 155 Scenars, Berger 155VLD or SMK155 Palma as I have not tried them and lack a .308Win with a barrel long enough but on paper at least they look pretty good for punching paper targets at long range.

HTH!

Re: reloding for remington 700sps tactical 308

I can say that 175SMKs and Varget are my go to load for anything from 800-1200 yds in my SPS-T. 178 AMAXs did well but not as good as the 175s. I have shot to 1k with 168 AMAXs and they work surprisingly well, but I would put them slightly behind the 175s for consistancy. However, in my gun, the 168 AMAXs absolutely shoot lights out for anything 600-800 and in. I now shoot all my matches with 168 AMAXs because our max distance is 600m and they shoot better than the 175s at that distance. but the 168s surprisingly shoot well for me at 1K (2700 fps MV).

I've tried the 155 Scenars and 155 Palmas and they shoot like ass out of my gun. Could never even come close in accuracy to the previous bullets. I gave up on them very quickly. YMMV

Notso,

Have you tried RL17 or IMR8208(A.K.A. "XBR")? powders? I've been loading H4895, IMR4895 and Varget but I'm looking forward to trying these powders soon. It's funny that the AMAX168s are so good yet SMK175s are still better than AMAX178s at least in my rifle anyway. Hopefully the Hornaday Match178s are as good or better than SMK175s, they are less money and on paper anyway have a better BC. So many good powders and projectiles in .308Win to work with these days!
