Hey fellas,

Im about done building my Rem. 700 .308. It has a "different" 1/12" twist and a 26" long barrel. I need some help as too what load I should start with that maybe you all have had good luck with. I need to keep a 3" group at 400 yards. My PD is allowing us to formulate our own loads and I have experience hand loading however its always hard for me to find something to start. I hear good and bad with everything from bullet to powder. I will be using Win. brass and federal match primers for sure. Now I just need bullets and powder. With a 1/12 twist should I stay between 150-168 to stabilize? Also what powder will work best with this set up?

Thanks,
Jordan

Re: Rem. .308 w/ 1/12" Twist Load Help

I have a 1-12 twist, 27" Lilja on my .308, and my pet load is either Win or Lapua brass, WLR primers, RE-15 powder and 175 SMK's. It shoots great out to 1000.

The conventional wisdom seems to be you need a 1-10 twist, but 1-12 is fine for 175's, I've even ran 190's thru it without keyholeing.

RE-15, Varget, 4064, they're all good powders.

Not trying to be a smart-ass, but I'd suggest loading up some ammo in increments, putting it across the chronograph, and finding a load that works. Loading for a .308 is a lot like tuning a small-block Chevy, it's been done before, and the data is out there. Have fun!

Re: Rem. .308 w/ 1/12" Twist Load Help

you should be good up to 175gr. bullets though I know some shooters have found heavier bullets that will work. I'm going to try some 180gr. Bergers this weekend, maybe they'll work too.

As to specific loads...check out the reloading section here, you'll find several loads that you can work with.

you should be able to find a good load with Varget, h4895, Reloader 15, 17, Winchester 748

Currently I'm trying reloader 15. 43.9 seems to be a good load behind a 168grn HPBT bullet. I could go hotter on this load but since it's just for paper and steel, it works for me.

I'll be doing the ladder method this weekend to find a load so I'm sure this will change.

Varget- 44.6 behind a 168grn HPBT. Varget is a faster powder so it doesn't do as well in the longer barrels unitl you get to the heavier bullets.

Re: Rem. .308 w/ 1/12" Twist Load Help

1:12 will handle nearly any bullet a 308 can effectively launch.

Could you potentially be using your ammo to shoot at bad guys? If so, some research on terminal ballistics is in order.

If you may be called on at any given moment, regardless of the time of year, I suggest either Varget or IMR8208xbr, as both are very temp stable. Lots of powders work great for 308, but those two have nearly identical velocity year round.

You need to run a pair of pressure "ladder" tests with bulles jammed. Find max pressure and identify suspected nodes. Then run an OCW test to finalize the load. This can all be done in 50 rounds or less.

Re: Rem. .308 w/ 1/12" Twist Load Help

I've had good results with 168g Amax bullets over 44g of Varget or R15, and not quite as good over 43.? of TAC. out of a M700 with a 26" 1/12.
I wonder how handloads would affect liability? Not trying to discourage, but we live in a sue happy society, just something to consider.

Re: Rem. .308 w/ 1/12" Twist Load Help

I wouldnt have believed it but my son loaded Hodgon H380 with 168 and 175 sierra match kings, they shot lights out in my 11.25 twist Obermeyer. I tried the staples 4895 varget,4064,748 ect.and while they all shot pretty well the H380 shot much better. All this came after I told my son not to waste his time loading H380 in a 308 win. WTH do I know.

Hey the perps don't care how they die!!!!! I would go with a 125gr TNT or Ballistic Tip as fast as you can push it. Shouldn't exit a meaty dude and if so and you have video for court it will have everyone on the edge of their seat!!!!

Re: Rem. .308 w/ 1/12" Twist Load Help

Does 22 posts still make this guy a newbie?

Ok, I was being nice in my question above. My husband had to carry department approved factory loaded ammo, in approved unmodified weapons.

Secondly, a police marksman has got to have a highly refined sensitivity to everything in his or her enviroment. Discerning any changes in the situation and must be able to pick up on fine details others might have missed. So I ask....

Why isn't this in the reloading section?

Re: Rem. .308 w/ 1/12" Twist Load Help

168gr smk
45gr varget
lapua brass full length size
cci BR-2 primer

The 168 smk falls apart around 800 yards. Out to 700 it shoots lights out. It is a very forgiving bullet and very a very temp stable powder.

A very appropriate question.

Now young lady....answer my question......you think the 'appropriate' place for this question should be elsewhere??? I think that wiggling ass you keep flashing at me and others with every post you make should be in a MUSEUM!!!! Just making a point that NOT EVERYTHING is as it 'should be'!!!

+1 The FLAG is flying high! What Dept. in their right mind would allow this into their S.O.P.? I can't even shoot my hand loads on my Departmental range in my personal weapons. BTW 42.5gr. of Varget, 168gr. Amax, Lapua brass, Fed 210M.

Re: Rem. .308 w/ 1/12" Twist Load Help

I have run 155 Lapua and SMK's in 168, 175 and 180 grains and also Berger's 190 VLD with the temps in the teens at 680 ASL and had no stability issues. A 12 twist is fine; some just prefer a faster twist when there is a choice.

I use varget and IMR 8208, both powders seem to turn in their best accuracy with in the last full grain of the Hodgdon data guide. All three SMK weights seem to be at their best in both my tactical and varmint 308 chambered rifles when the bullet is seated right around 2.825" OAL. I am using Winchester brass and primers.

Thanks for the answers guys. For those who don't know and instead want to call BS congrats on being so low. I do not owe an explanation but I can and will say that I am not with a standard police department. I work for an SRT through diplomatic relations and that is all you bull Shit enthusiasts need to know. Again thanks guys. I will be playing around to find a load that will work best with our new setup!
