I have a 700 in .300WM with a Sako Extractor installed. This was built by the Arnold Arms Co. around 1999. The 700 has a Badger DBM installed by GA Precision.

I have multiple failure to extract/eject with the brass getting hung up inside the ejection port. It is random and happens when I cycle the bolt both fast and slow, but more so when I cycle the bolt fast. I've searched and found issues regarding the Sako Extractors, the angle of the brass hitting the port, and ejector springs too stiff.

My brass seems to be getting dinged at the mouth - the ones in the pic were ran through several times and are quite dinged. Also looking at the pic of the Sako Extractor it is roughly 180 degrees from the ejector - other extractors seem to be offset more and I'm wondering if this is part of the cause....if the angle of the brass is wrong.

Options I have consider include purchasing a Pacific Tool and Gauge bolt and having it installed - any other routes? I've tried playing with the ejector spring tension, but no luck. The Sako Extractor has no crud/brass to make it bind. If I go with the PT&G Bolt who would be the smith to send everything off to?

Any help is much appreciated!

I have a Tikka, which I believe is similar to the Sako. if the ejector in your pic is about 9:30 on the clock, mine would be 6:30. About 90 deg. CCW. FWIW

You have ejection issues because the Sako type extractor is in a piss poor position in relationship to the ejector and the bolt lugs in the Remington’s. Nothing you can do about the position because it's a Remington bolt and the Sako extractor was made to fit it.

Now there are aftermarket bolt makers that help by repositioning the ejector to work better with the installed Sako extractor to help with clearing the brass but this is not a fix all.

Dinging the mouth of the case can also be caused with a factory extractor and ejector so that's not the fault of the Sako extractor. The mouth of the case is banging the inside of the receiver once it clears the chamber and before it clears the ejection port. To help this you can trim half a coil at a time from the ejection spring and this will sometimes help. Before you try this have an extra spring on hand just in case it doesn’t work.

There is also machining that can be done to the receiver to help with ejection but this is also not a fix all.

You might also try changing out the extractor with a new one.

Do another sako extractor search back a few years. I had the same issues on a rifle I bought. You can bevel the extractor tooth profile (the part that grabs the case rim). This worked for me. I would definitely have a spare part on hand before trying this. I think Jered at APA (formerly Patriot Arms) listed the steps out.
This may not work for all people but for me it was less expensive than shipping the action out. This fix may help extract/eject but won't likely help with the case mouth dings.
Good luck.

The problem is a common one when using the magnum Sako extractor with the conversion. To do so properly, the 308 size (medium) extractor should be used and you gunmaker should have known this. It can be rectified two ways, a new bolt from PTG or by removing some of the hook to make it narrower so the empty departs at a less steep angle.
