Rifle Scopes Rem 700 5R 308 and Weaver V 16

Just got a 5R in 308, and with the IRS I am tapped out for a bit.I do however have a Weaver V16 variable 4x16x42 in the gun locker. The Weaver has around a 50" adjustment range at 100 yards I think. So as a temporary solution would this work? It would be for paper punching only.I'd like to go 500+yards out with it but don't know if that will work.So a 20 moa base seems likely but I don't know. So will it work ? What moa base height do I need? Any and all comments are greatly appreciated!

Re: Rem 700 5R 308 and Weaver V 16

weavers are fine glass and they trac very well. It won't be the most tactical, hardest, or fastest glass in the world, but it will certainly get the job done.....

I would assume you could get a standard 168-175gr load out to 500 without a 20MOA rail. YOiu will likely have a bout 30moa of adjustment "up" after you zero and that should get it done. But, there are so many good 20moa bases out there it seems almost standard procedure to use one. THe only "down side" is your scope gets mounted a tiny bit higher with many of the models and you will likely loose some of your ability to dial down to ranges below 100yrds--but that shouldn't really matter or can be made non-noticable.
