Sorry if this has been covered, I searched but didint really find much. Im looking into a 5r built. whats the difference between the 5r reciever and other rem 700 actions. I got the barrel info. and ive seen where people have duracoted the stainless finish, when duracoted is the inside of the reciever done aswel? would that affect the feeding? If the 5r is not the way to go what would be the best way to build a Rem 700 bolt gun? thanks for the info aheaad of time.

Re: rem 700 5r milspec

the only difference in the recievers is one is stainless steel and one is coated

Re: rem 700 5r milspec

They just call it a Milspec. They're not actually military spec. barrels, just 5R rifling. The military doesn't use an 11-degree crown.

Re: rem 700 5r milspec

sounds like the rem 700 actions are all the same. And 5r is just a rifle with stainless finish 5r rifling?

Re: rem 700 5r milspec

the actions can be ss or blue, long or short. barrel can be 5r or 6. recess target or 11 degree. all different

Re: rem 700 5r milspec

As stated above, the 5R SS Milspec is only milspec in the rifling. It's a good base rifle, and shoots .5 MOA out of the box. I chose to use one on my first build, and I am very happy with the performance. You can see what i did below:

You can also read a good review here:

Hope it helps and welcome from another new guy.

Re: rem 700 5r milspec

While i've never heard anything bad about the 5R's, there's also a large following of guys that used the SPSv or SPS tac to do there builds. While this might be hottly debaited, It's my honest opinion that either will outshoot most people on the forum. I personaly went with the SPS tac in 308 and plan on spending the savings on the upgrades. I saw that route would better fit my needs, but by all means if you like most of what the 5R has to offer, its a great platform.

Re: rem 700 5r milspec

The 5R rifling is what Remington uses in their M24 rifles that they build for the Army. They use the same rifling in the commercial 700 5R Milspec, but the barrel contour, and more than likely attention to detail are a little bit smaller.
