Rem 700 ADL/SPS questions.

Been lurking a while, descided it was time to make a first post both because I have a question and I need posts.


Was contemplating a Remmington 700 model, chambered in .308 for some long range shooting which I can get into easily where I live, Looked at some prices and I saw that the SPS was about 300$ more than the ADL, looked into it quite a bit myself and saw the ADL had a bit of a longer barrel and a hinged floorplate, now maybe this is all, or maybe not, but its all ive heard people say is the difference between the two. Question is, is that really all, is just a hinged floorplate and a few inches longer barrel worth 300$ more, or is there something im missing? Aswell, for a long range shooting rifle straight stock out of the box from a major box store, such as Academy, Is the ADL/SPS good for long range shooting, or is one more than the other? Final question, I have heard the SPS and ADL's stock's are a bit wobbley and affects accuracy a lot, generally pieces of crap, should I contemplate needing to buy a new stock in the overall price of getting the rifle? Thanks in advance, lot to ask for a first post but I thought who else to ask then a community of people who do nothing but this crap.

Welcome to the Hide Bro! Word of advise, I've been down that road a couple of times. And many similar questions and situations have been posted on this site. From personal experience, I would suggest to get the Cheaper of the 2 to start with. As your interest in this hobby grows deeper there pretty much won't be anything left factory on the rifle by the time you're satisfied, so may as well start with the cheaper setup since most if not all stuff came on the rifle will be replaced.

For the SPS and many of the Remington Rifles, The Stock and Trigger are usually the first ones to go. Even the ones with HS Precision Stocks gets replaced even before it's been shot sometimes. Look on Stocky's Stocks website for some Bell & Carlson Stocks for Quality and Reasonable Priced replacements. Remington is usually a good starting point since there's So Much you can do to them later on and so much after market parts supports. You will never run out of options or ideas. I've used both the ADL and SPS. ADL is the lowest end model and was actually replaced by the SPS a few years ago. My ADL shot perfectly fine (I'm sure you can get far better accuracy with a free floating barrel) but to be honest for the price of an ADL you can not go wrong. The reason I ended up with an SPS was I got a smoking deal through Cabelas on a 700 SPS with a detachable magazine and the X-Mark Pro adjustable trigger. Both models are excellent out of box rifles and you won't be disappointed with either.

What SPS are you looking at that's $300 more than an ADL. Everything I've seen ADL's go for $400-450 and SPS's are $500-550. Even the SPS varmint is only $550.

The ADL's and SPS's are virtually the same, the only difference is the mag type. The stocks are the same too just made differently in the trigger gaurd area.

I wouldn't buy a ADL or SPS sported barrel if you plan on doing long range. It won't be as accurate as a heavy barrel and will heat up really quick. If your looking into a entry level long range rifle I would check out the SPS Varmint, SPS Tactical, AAC-SD, or the ADL varmint dicks sells. Only downside to the ADL Varmint is youre going to have the buy the BDL bottom metal the SPS comes with in order to drop it in a halfway decent stock. At that point you will be at the same cost as what a SPSV or T would cost you from buds. Whichever you buy you're going to have to replace the stock though.

You're gonna going to want something with a varmint profile barrel if you're planning on long range precision shooting. There's a lot of stuff for the 700, it can be overwhelming to take it in all at once. Just figure out what you want in a rifle and research the hell out of it.

I know Academy is carrying the SPS Varmint and Tactical now, I haven't seen an ADL varmint model there, but different stores carry different stuff.

This is the thing, whichever one you get, you're probably going to change the stock. There is a larger selection of BDL stocks to choose from. You will eventually tire of having to run the bolt just to empty the mag with an ADL. Then you'll want either a hinged floorplate or a DBM. A floorplate kit runs about 160. Right around the actual price difference between an adl varmint and an sps varmint (actually a bit more).

If you were going to immediately put the action in a chassis, I'd go ADL. Somehow, I don't think that is you plan.

FWIW, Academy is also selling the Howa 20" HB model for almost 100 less than the SPS tact. A very good deal on a very good rifle.

The ADL varmint is a dicks special order, never seen or heard of another place carrying it.

ADL is available at Walmart as well as Dicks. Walmart will sell the ADL for $417, and the ADL Youth for $397. The youth uses a shorter stock and a shorter barrel, bit the same action. I went that route, since I knew that I was going to change the stock and cut and thread the barrel, anyway.
