Gunsmithing Rem 700 SA 6.5x47 feed issue

I have a Rem 700 SA that was originally a .223. I had a gunsmith convert it to a .308. True the action new PTG bolt pinned the recoil. Lug ,put on a Shilen 7 bbl. I then bought a new 6.5 bbl and had it chambered in 6.5x47 lapua. I had used a Legacy polymer DBM and mag and it worked fine til the smith over tightened the rear screw and cracked it. So I ordered a PTG BOTTOM AND AN AICS 5round mag. I couldn't get it to fit so brought it to a local shop. It will not load a round for shit. I took it back and said it wasn't feeding right. I got it back again and it still won't feed. It is the .308 mag . The smith said he will cut the feedlips back. I could see where they milled the receiver but I'm so frustrated. Any ideas? I think maybe opening the lips will raise the cartridge up where the bolt will catch it.
Ok! Brought it to my old gunsmith who looked at it, figured out the mag which was a .308 needed to have the feeding lips cut back proportionate to the 6.5x47 vs 308. THAT DID IT!!

Chad hopefully will be along he can describe it better than me . Put the gun up on a bipod and rear bag pull the bolt out and insert a loaded magazine in the well . Look from the rear of the action down the barrel if I remember correct amount you should see the top third of the 6.5 base up in the opening. Bending or sanding the magazine lips may release the cartridge too early you might be better off adjusting the mag catch to move the whole magazine up ? Just don't want the mag dragging on the bolt when cycling.

Thank you! The bolt does not drag on the mag. I noticed that it is a .308 mag and the round drop with the bullet facing down where I have to pull the whole case back toward the end of the mag. I load it with cat Ridge against the back of mag. My gunsmith says he can cut the feed lips back.

I'm fairly new to this but I think your mags are not close enough to the bolt . Your bolt is catching the top of the round pushing it down so the bottom metal isn't inletted deep enough . I have a 6.5x47 and it feeds from every 308 mag I have plastic or metal.
I'm guessing at this point without seeing it but if it were me I would try adjusting the mag catch trimming it to push the mag up closer.
The pros will be in shortly ...

I met with the smith again. He has tried "tuning " the mag lips, He says it is inletted properly. He demonstrated that the AICS mag has enough slop in the bottom metal to cause the bullet end of the cartridge to drop down. It's like the mag needs a different spring design. Please tell me what DBM you have. I think the problem may be with the PTG bottom metal. I really hate to change but this whole DBM has been a nightmare.

i prefer accurate mags with area 419 extensions. using chassis built in bottom metal. i have aics mag with mpa extension and it works flawless. may try taking bottom plate off and stretching spring a little so it pushes up a little more pressure. mpa website has a good video on mag tuning showing how to adjust feed lips. prob find on you tube as well. it is possible your bottom metal is at the high end of its tolerance and is just a little too big of an opening. may try to measure and see if there are specs on ptg webpage. also possible your aics mag is at its low end of specs and also out of size.

Thanks for your feedback. Smith tried tuning mag to no avail. Round loaded up tight against wall of mag. Bullet dips down vs up toward ramp. Mag is a bit lose and that is causing problem. I am thinking I may need to bite the bullet and throw in the towel on this DBM mag set up. I'm leaning toward it's not the mag but the bottom metal. It's a Bell and Carlson A5 stock with no mods other than free floated bbl. If anyone has experience with a DBM for B and c stock please let me know.

not sure if you have the ability to try another mag, perhaps someone at the range may have another aics or accurate mag you can test to rule out a mag issue. not sure where your located but if you were in michigan i would be happy to let you try out some of my mags. Also remember reading about the follower inside the mag causing an issue for someone. i believe they had a burr on the edge not allowing it to slide properly in the mag.
