Hey guys, I had a .223 built on a 700 action about a year ago and needed the smaller bolt-face so I ordered a PTG one-piece bolt w/ the Sako extractor.. Since, I've come to the realization that this may not be totally safe.. It works really good, but on the other hand, my factory 700 bolts haven't had any issues with extraction.. I wish now I would have used a factory bolt/extractor.. I don't handload, at some point I will pry start tho.. Can someone impart words of wisdom? How nervous should I be? I really don't want to take an extractor to the eyeball..

I'll get my BS out of the way first. The Sako isn't an upgrade IMO, and can cause issues with ejection angle and brass bouncing back into the ejection port off the rail or windage cap. I have several rifles with "Sako~ish" extractors or m16/m16 mini extractors and if the action is designed around them it's a non-issue.

that said, the issues most people talk about is the extractor separating after an over pressure round locking the bolt shut. This can require pulling the barrel to fix. I wouldn't worry about it, especially with 223. Even a hot ass handload shouldn't be enough to hurt that bolt face/extractor. Hell most people who change to a Sako unit will never have any issues.
