Hey guys, I traded around and got a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308 caliber. This will be my first build and I wanted to run my mods list by the experts to see what you thought. Flame on if you feel the need but I am new to long range shooting and I have read and researched on here for months. The rifle is bone stock and has never been fired but it has developed some surface rust from the guy storing it too long so I plan to paint with Duracoat after I get it all assembled (May try a multicam pattern). (I traded him a well worn SKS for it so I don't feel I got screwed) I plan to shoot it a while before I change the barrel and add a can. Here is my list:

McMillan A3 or A4 stock
Badger Bolt Knob
Badger Picatinny rail (not sure what MOA)
Badger M5 with RDPrecision latch
30mm spoke mounts probably Badger USMC would like some see thrus if you have any suggestions
Leopold Mark4 4.5-14 50 Illum. reticle
Atlas Bipod but not sure how to attach it
tactical intervention M24 sling

I would like to do all the assembly and fitting myself so I can learn the techniques, except the bolt knob because I don't have the machining equipment to thread the bolt. I would buy a bolt with a tactical knob on it if I knew where to purchase. Also, if anyone knows of a remington 700 "bible" please let me know. I appreciate any input and look forward to discussing the build with all of you.

My build is pretty much the same...

SPS Tactical .308
McMillan A4 fully adjustable
Harris Swivel/Notched and pod lock
Monopod
20 MOA Badger Base
Mark 4 Rings
Badger Bolt
Super Sniper 10X

will be threaded for my suppressor as well..

I am waiting on a different scope to come in... but the SS works VERY well..

I have a Leupy Mark 4 LRT thats the 6.5X20X50mm... I got it for about $800... new.... its HARD to find a NightForce for anywhere close to about $400 more..

Matt.

I would avoid the see-through rings. The rifle doesn't have irons so there isn't much need unless you have an incredibly large head or a neck like a giraffe. Otherwise it is going to really bollocks up your cheekweld and give you one hell of a height over bore problem.
I did a lot of Badger stuff on mine.
SPS T in .308
H-S LTR stock
Pre-X Mark Pro trigger
BO 20 MOA base
BO Medium rings
SWFA SS 3-9x42 FFP
BO bolt knob
SEI Vortex
CDI DBM
Bobro Gen 2 w/M14/M1A/M24 base
Turner M1907

Look at the package Mark at SAC (short action customs) is advertising in the Gunsmithing forum. It includes a tactical bolt knob, and trueing the action. It's a pretty good value if you are going to be building on an SPS platform. It's what I was going to do, before I changed directions.

I'm doing that exact thing with SAC right now, so I'll report back on how it turned out. But for $525 - it looks like the work will be well worth it in terms of accuracy and functionality.

My build will end up being:

SPS-T .308
S&B 5-25x56mm PMII P4F
34mm Seekins Rings and 20MOA base
HS-precision 5R takeoff stock
CDI bottom metal w/ AICS 10-rnd mags
Harris 6-9" w/ Pod lock
Threaded barrel
Badger FTE brake
Badger bolt knob
Eagle Stock pack
Old style Rem 700 trigger tuned to 1.5lbs
Barrel and action truing by SAC

The basic SPS-T before I sent it off to SAC was a consitant <3/4 MOA shooter with reloads. And when I've been on my game I've gotten under 1/2 MOA on occasion with the bare stock rifle. I can't wait to see how well it shoots after the accuracy work when it gets back!

One add: Nothing against Badger, but I loves me the Seekins rings/base and the CDI bottom metal. Both products have been flawless.

Buddy of mine has one of these, his bone stock (with the exception of a bell and carlson stock) sps Tactical .308 and it out performs my 5-R! Great rifle. we just duracoated it for the rust problem. He took a couple of praire dogs at 945 and 947 yds a month ago. It loves 175 SMK/varget.
NF NXS 8-32x56, TPS rings, EGW base.
