I am new to Snipers Hide, been lurking for some time. I have recently made a commtiment to get involved with rifles for target shooting (previously just a hunter). Anyway I just purchased a Rem 700 Varmit in 223 with the bull barrel and A Rem 700 VSSF in 17 fireball. I want to start off shooting benchrest in 100 to 200 yard ranges to begin with. My question is one of moving to higher end stocks. I am finishing a Richards micro stock (dual grip thumbhole)that I will pillar and glass bed for the 17 fireball. Was wondering if that sounds like a decent beginning platform or should I move to something else. I would also like any advice on a stock for the 223. While $$ are a huge issue, i dont like to spend needlessly and I enjoy projects such as finishing and fitting a gun stock. Thanks in advise for your thoughts and advice!

Re: Rem 700 Stock questions

Welcome to the board. Hope you enjoy your stay.

As far as your questions, you have a few options.

If you go McMillan you can bed it yourself. If you're feeling sprightly Manners sells unfinished stocks that require paint, bedding and MAYBE some fitting, but I'm not totally sure on that last part. If you're handy with a lathe and some shop tools you can take some measurements and make your own stock with your wood of choice from scratch. My uncle did it with a Savage 7mm-08. Carved a spot in the forend that was molded to his hands and did some checkering, a few painted accents and then varnished/lacquered it and it came out fantastic. Can't remember exactly what type of wood he used but it was some exotic stuff he had laying around the shop and it looked great with the lacquer.
