Rem 700 TAC 16.5" versus 700 5R in .223

I want a 16.5" .223 bolt gun to shoot with a suppressor. I would use this rifle for range shooting steel and a little hunting. I know I would likely have to use 69 grain bullets. I would like for it to have the potential for MOA accuracy out to 5-600 yards. I have it down to 2 choices. Option #1 for $650 is a Remington 700 SPS TAC 16.5" threaded hammer forged barrel and a Hogue over mold stock. I have a line on an HS stock (5R take off) for $200 that I would use to replace the Hogue. Option #2 for $1100 is the 700 5R 20" option. I would have the barrel cut, crowned, and thread protector made for $85. There is approximately $350 difference between the 2 options with the major difference being the barrels. Is the 5R barrel worth the additional $350 given my proposed application?

From what I've noticed is that 16.5" SPS can be hit or miss with accuracy but for the most part they seem just under or right at a MOA, some better, some worse. Now the 5R barrels are definitely under MOA my .300 WinMag 5R shoots half MOA as does my cousins .308 5R. I realize you're dealing with .223 but one can conclude the .223 5R will be comfortably under MOA.

Get the SPS and the HS stock, done..... Its going to cost more than 350 for the 5R because you want it cut down and threaded still

I would say its more to do with the stock, its well known the plastic SPS and Hogue stocks are junk

Yeah I still have a hard time seeing how Remington allowed the SPS to wear those stocks, the SPS's are so much better with a Bell and Carlson or Mcmillan, etc. However, even with the stocks the way they are touching the barrel towards the end it shouldn't have much of an effect if any on accuracy inside of 300 meters.

I have a sps and love it shoots under a moa with 77gr smk dont think you'd go wrong with either choice

I will tell you with this stuff you get what you get.
That said, the best, most accurate and consistent rifle I have owned in 52 years is a 24" 5r which was cut to re chamber fresh in 223 by Mark Gordon. Factory rifle with some machine work and a Timney set at about 2.5. Sold here to a MD. Regrets, glad HE got it. 1" groups at 200 puts a smile on quick especially at that cost level. 69 @ 3000fps w/ H4895. Nice indeed.

I have a 16.5" stock sps remington in a pdc chassis and it shoots ~1/2 moa groups @ 100-200 w/ my 69 smk handloads @ 2650 fps and no problems hitting steel out to 700 yds asl in calm conditions. I couldn't be happier with this gun.

I picked up a .223 Remington Model 700 Tactical Cerakote w/5R rifling. The r4ifle came factory with a medium weight varmint barrel, 24" long with fluting. I love this rifle, it shoots sub MOA easily at 100. I have also owned a Remington SPS Tactical in .308, and although I selected the wrong stock to put it in, it shot sub MOA at 100 as well. Note that I do not shoot that well, do to inexperience... my stated groups belong to the rifle not the shooter.

I will point out that the Model 700 I have in 5R came with a nice Bell & Carlson M40 style stock, and I paid $700 (New!) for it. The SPS can be had from $500 to $650 if you watch sales closely both here and or on Gun Broker etc. The SPS will need a different stock, as the supplied Hogue overmold is sub-par with the platform. I the Model 700 Tactical Cerakote can also be had in .308, 300MG & 7MM RM... Bud's sometimes has them in stock.

I fail @ having any kind of patience... I bought the 223 %r Remington only when I could not get my hands on the Remington 700 SPS w/ B&C stock in 30-06, but that is another thread entirely.

I also have a sps tact 16.5 that I replaced with a HS precision stock. shoots great its a sub moa rifle. I also had a Remington 700 5r 223 24" barrel that didn't seem to shoot any better than the sps 16.5. I sold the 5r and kept this cause its lightweight compared to that 24".

The reason I ask is the LOP is 14". It does however have a 1" pad that is room to spare if you need it. Solid platform.
