ok i got a remington 710 short action for free, but im not that happy with it, im sure u guys already know the common 710 issues. in short its just cheap. is it possible/worth it to build the 710, or should i just try and sell it for cheap. its got exactly 58 rounds through it.

Re: rem 710 =[

You can't rebarrel it as its a pressed on action. Now the good parts. For a cheap gun it has alot of good features. the % bolt through (minus the horrible action), Floating bolt head, and the action lugs are not actually in the action but machined into the barrel. Spend a few minutes to free float the barrel with sandpaper and the trigger can be adjusted to be quite good. Then reload for it and use it for hunting.

I have a 710 in 270win and its a laser with handloads and will more than suffice to take hunting.

Re: rem 710 =[

guy i work with has one in .300 winmag that he claims to harvest deer at 8-900 yards with ear/neck shots with just a foot of hold over.

all joking aside, the rifle is not meant as a precision rifle. friend of mine has one, he uses, and i have seen the groups he produces with it (3-4" at 100 yards) so for a budget hunting rifle sure it works

Re: rem 710 =[

I have a 710 in .270. It is, just what I bought it to be, a deer/pig hunting rifle. It's never let me down, will make 1" groups @100, even w/ the horrible trigger pull. It is what it is. An entry level hunting rifle, that is cheaply built but fully functional. For free it'll make a back up hunting rifle. Enjoy the price.

Re: rem 710 =[

If you got it for free, then you aren't out anything except your time/frustration. Sell it for what you can get out of it and move to a 700 action or something else that you can build on.

Re: rem 710 =[

Just got mine in .30-06 a couple of weeks ago at a Pawn Shop for $250. Overall, I am extremely pleased. Was able to get a 3/4" group at 100 yds with a 15-20 mph left quartering headwind using Winchester 180g PowerPoints. And, I never had to adjust the stock 3-9 Burris that came with it. From talking with Flyboy, I am now planning on working up some handloads on the heavy end - 180g and up. I usually like the ~150g in my 7.62's.

The trigger does need a little tweaking, but that is easily remedied. The bolt is not as tight during movement as my Savage 110 Police Tactical HB .308, but it didn't cost near as much either.
