Anyone have any suggestions/opinions about buying this gun? I would like to purchase one in .308

Re: Rem LE 700P

I have one and it shoots very well. Probably the best shooter out of the box rifle that I have shot. Id suggest that if you like the rifle then go buy it. You wont be disappointed with it.

Re: Rem LE 700P

Great rifle for the price and there is a ton of aftermarket items out there to customize to your liking.

Great base to start a build or add some glass and have fun...

Re: Rem LE 700P

I have one as well as a Remington SPS Tactical and they are both very accurate. My 700P will shoot 1/2" - 3/4" groups at 100 yards all day long with Federal GMM 168's and my SPS Tactical will Shoot 1/2" and under with both Federal GMM 168's and 175's. I have owned some very high end rifles and at the end I always return to the Factory 700's For the price they cant be beat.

Re: Rem LE 700P

Can not comment on the sps, but had a pss in 308 it was a great gun that would shoot .5-.75 moa. Made the mistake of selling it. I am looking for another one now.

Re: Rem LE 700P

I just bought the SPS Varmint, which i feel is equal to the SPS P or SPS tactical. As of right know Bass pro has the SPS varmint on sell with a mail in rebate to equal $474.00, before tax. Can't beat it. Only problem is there hard to find, at least on my side of the world. Bought the last 2 my store had today.

I shot several thousand rounds through one before it was retired. I liked it better than the 700 LTR that I have now. The 700P is longer, but I really liked it. I had the stock Remington trigger before it was replaced with a Jewel (I think). Remington trigger sucks. I hope it comes with the new X Mark trigger.......

Re: Rem LE 700P

Just remember that the sps tactical and the 700P have the same action. The 700P has a 26 inch barrel, while the sps tactical has a 20 inch barrel. As a result, the 700P will have a slightly higher muzzle velocity but aside from that they are very similar.

The thing that you need to be aware of is the most significant difference between the two rifles. The sps tactical comes in a cheap, low quality, plastic stock. However, the 700P comes in a high quality fiberglass sock from HS precision. That stock is the biggest reason for the price difference between these two rifles.

Re: Rem LE 700P

I have a .308 700P 26" barrel and a .308 SPS Tactical 20" barrel. The SPS stock sucks its flimsy and touches the barrel when using a bipod the 700P stock has an aluminum bedding block which free floats the barrel. You might think the SPS is a better deal but IMHO it is not. If you decide to get a better stock for the SPS you will be near the same price as the 700P in the end.

Also the 20" barrel has a lot more muzzle flip which is annoying to me, the longer barrel of the 700P is more enjoyable to shoot with no noticeable muzzle flip. My SPS doesn't shoot as well as the 700P with my handloads. the best it does is 1/4 inch between bullet holes the 700P will print bug holes (hole on hole) until I pull a bad shot. It's still respectable performance from a factory rifle though.

Triggers are not setup very well from the factory I lightened the pull on both of them they are both great now and didn't cost me dime well about $5 for some locktite to keep the tiny screws snug.

My SPS varmint 26" shoots as well as the 700P it's in 243 though and I had to get a McMillan stock to free float the barrel to get the good groups, after the new stock it cost as much as the 700P or more.

The free floating 700's although they cost more it is because of the aluminum bedding blocks and IMO the price is justified. Trust me I tried the cheaper model route and in the end I didn't save any money, twice...
