I have a chance to buy a used remington 40X that is around 30 years old, wood is 90%, bore looks to be like new, it has the standard trigger and appears to have the heavy 26 inch barrel. The guy wants $895 for it, my concern is #1 is it worth it and #2 the caliber, I'm not sure a 6mm remington is a good candidate for a 40X.

Re: Remington 40X 6mm remington

What do you plan on useing it for ??? The 40x 6mm was my first varmint/target rifle. It's topped with a 24 pwr redfield and has a heavy 26" stainless barrel.I got it for $400 about twentyfive years ago.It came with loaded rounds, data, dies and alot of components. It was part of an estate sale,I guess I got lucky. It's a right bolt rifle(I'm a lefty),but It has a straight target stock. It shoots great and has never let me down. The 6mm is a good cartridge. It's basically a slightly longer 243.Why do you think it wouldn't be a good candidate for the 40X,when it was chambered from the factory in 6mm ?
I think $895 is a little steep for the rifle. It might have sentimental value to the seller,so make a counter offer and see what happens.

I would buy it for a purely benchrest rifle, the only thing I would be able to compare it to was a 40XBBR in 222 I had years ago that would shoot in the 1/4" range at 100 yds, that is what I would be expecting from the 6mm remington.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the accuracy of the 6mm Rem cartridge. With the right load,Mine is a tackdriver too and way past 100yds.I was lucky enough to get the load data with my rifle.Over time,It's kept up with my other "new" tackdriver cartridges with improved projos and powder.
Good Luck,

My 6mm Rem really likes IMR4350. Have a 1:10 barrel so I don't shoot anything heavier than 87gr.

Re: Remington 40X 6mm remington

The price is on the low end of what I see 40x rifles go for. The rifle itself is excellent, so I think you'll be happy with how well it shoots. I took my 40xc out of the XC stock and dropped it into a reamed out PSS stock, which I'm even happier with. I'll shoot 1/2" groups with factory and better with handloads. Mine is 308 though. I'd buy it, even if only to get the action.
