I have a Remington model 700 5R in 300 WM 26" barrel and I'm looking into a new stock and a new magazine assembly. I think I have decided I'm going to go with the H S Precision trigger guard and detachable mag assembly but I'm lost on what stock to go with. I like the thumbhole stocks, I feel they allow me to be more stable when shooting especially longer distances. It's mainly my hunting rifle so the factory stock on it is ok just a little bulky behind the trigger. Anyone else put a different stock on theirs with advice? Have any pictures?

What's your budget?

I'd scratch the HS precision bottom metal and go with something that will allow you to use AICS type mags. PTG, Atlasworks, Surgen are a few that I'd consider.

Stock...quite a few to choose from

Never done a 5R but a 700 is a 700.
I used to like the TH stocks until I went with a modified 40X for my 700..love it.(under high power competition on McMillan site) It's great for the range but a bit heavy for hunting. I've since gone back to the original stock but my next build will be in that stock...I'll just deal with the weight.

Re: Remington 5R build suggestions/help

My budget is open to whatever I need/want to put on this gun. I like that the H S mag assembly is cleaner looking and not as bulking as the AICS type mag that'll catch more on things while out hunting. I'll check out those stocks.

Re: Remington 5R build suggestions/help

I strongly agree with others on skipping on the H&S Precision bottom metal. Here's why. The mags are very expensive, not the easiest to get, and in the smaller mag you will only get 4 rounds. The release latch sucks for fast reloads, hard to find for me. Not to mention the whole thing is not cheap. Most of the Badger type Bottom metals are great, and all use ACSI mags that you can get anywhere. Hope that helps

Re: Remington 5R build suggestions/help

elk, look into a Seekins DBM. Seekins uses an ambi button, not a latch for the mag release. Also, HS Precision makes a fairly affordable thumbhole stock. It looks kind of like the factory stock the 5R's come in, but with a thumbhole.

If money is no object, I'd be rolling a KMW Sentinel!! Damn I love that stock!!!!

Re: Remington 5R build suggestions/help

I inletted my HS Precision for a PTG detachable bottom a few months back with a dremel and die grinder. It was slow going, but it turned out really well.

However, since day one I have not been too keen on the feel of the HS Precision so last week I ordered a Manners T4A off their ready to ship list. It's supposed to be here tomorrow and is already inletted for the M5. When it shows up I'm gonna bed it shoot the crap out of it. I like the McMillan A5 I have on another rifle, and expect the T4A to feel just as good.

I personally like stocks better than chassis setups for whatever reason, so that's what I'm sticking with.

BTW here's my dremel job:

Re: Remington 5R build suggestions/help

Thanks for the advise! That KMW Sentinel is a sweet stock! The only thing I don't like about it tho is the weight, it's 3lbs heavier than that H S thumbhole stock. And yes those H S detachable mags are spendy, $325, and you only get 3 rounds in a mag but I have a local dealer that has like 5 on his shelf and extra mags also, $90-100. And those H S ones will bolt right into my factory stock with really no trimming the stock so I can continue to take it out til I decide on a stock for sure. And if I went H S that'll just swap right into it. But overall my main concern is weight, I'm looking at having my barrel fluted to help shave like another pound off it. Climbing up and down mountains with a 13 lb rifle on your back going from 5500 ft to 8000 ft it tends to wear on you and it's still got to fit into my rifle scabbard on the horse.

Give yourself a pat on the back - nicely done.

Re: Remington 5R build suggestions/help

Thanks guys, my T4A just arrived this afternoon so I quickly bolted it up just to get a feel for it. I had to file one little spot for the safety linkage on my Jewel trigger. This thing is nice. I really hoped that I liked it after spending the money on it, and it turns out that I'm very pleased. I'll post up a picture later on. After Christmas and I get some free time I'll get it bedded and start shooting it again.

No kidding, really nice dremel work. My dremel work looks like I did it with a weedwhacker.

Re: Remington 5R build suggestions/help

I will 2nd or 3rd passing on the hs bottom metal. I have had a few of the hs metals, 308, 300, 338
If you want a mag set up go with a common aics compatible, as the hs mags are hard to find, bottom metal is never in stock, and no more than 4 rds in 300 class cartridges.

On a side note if you must have one, I can remove the one I have, for my 300 with 4 mags and will sell it reasonable..

Re: Remington 5R build suggestions/help

Okay fella's as promised. Keep in mind that my 5R is a .308 and therefore short action. That said, here's my new T4A molded in desert beside my A5 molded in desert GAP.

I really like the PTG bottom metal for the money. I had $130 in the bottom metal and you can pick up the .308 mags for around $70, so you're ready to go with $200 initially invested. Hard to beat for the money.

Re: Remington 5R build suggestions/help

Ok it took me awhile to get all the info together and get ahold of H-S Precision but unfortunately they don't make the thumbhole stock for my 300 WM. They ony make it for SA not LA rifles. So I will look towards Manners thumbhole or maybe look into a Blackhawk! stock I saw just because it only weighs like 2 lbs.
