What is the value of a used Remington 5R in .308 with the 20" threaded barrel?

The problem is someone switched the HS Precision Stock for a Hogue stock.

Why would someone trade in a rifle such as a Remington 5R after they had traded the stock for a Hogue stock?

For reference, I just bought a like new 15 (claimed) rounds fired 24" 5R without a scratch on it or any wear on the bolt and the factory box that appears to be about 10 years old. Has the old style stainless trigger. It included a flawless Badger 20 MOA base and I paid $925.

Lots of reasons it may have the Hogue stock. Original owmer may have put it in a chassis like the AICS and sold the HS, then when he wanted to sell bought a cheap takeoff to put it in so he could keep his chassis?

Am I being too suspicious about this gun? I mean if you order a threaded 5R you know you are looking for accuracy. If you swapped the original HS stock and put the gun in a chassis or better stock and it was not accurate then you might want to sell the gun.

Keep the original HS stock and sell the gun with a Hogue stock probably off of another gun you had bought.

A 5R that is not accurate is worth not much in my mind.

That is a valid concern, and your train of thought seems sound to me. Lots of people upgrade, or just get bored also though. Not anyway to be sure, just ask questions and decide whether the seller is trustworthy.

If the deal isn't right, then it just ain't meant to be as they say. Lots of proven rifles out there for sale used, won't hurt to keep shopping.

Of course, if you could get it for $700, you could add a Bartlein barrel for $500-ish, and a stock out of the classifieds and have something more accurate than any factory gun for only a few hundred more than a new rifle that you'd be rolling the dice on... Can still sell the Hogue for $50, maybe the takeoff barrel for another $50.
