I've been searching for a while, but this seems to be a bit out of the ordinary. I have a friend who has reached the age where he felt he should disperse some of his collection, and has asked me to help to an extent. One of the rifles is a Remington 600 in .223, which only had about 315 made. The 600 itself is not an overly valuable rifle, but with so few of the .223's made it has stepped up the value.

I've found (and advised by some) it could start at auction at $1500, but there was a sale offered on a site for $3000. That's a wide span.

Any thoughts on where i could look?

Did you find any completed auctions to get a better idea of the real price? It's rare but probably not really highly sought after. If your not in a hurry you can list it with a high reserve and see what you get. Sometimes it's hard to really lock in a price on oddball stuff because there is little to no recent history.

The old adage of 'they're only worth what someone is willing to pay for it' generally falls into place well here with guns that have a smaller collector base.

Since you mentioned auctioning it, you could always start at your hopeful $1,500 beginning. Chances are that if there is much of a following/desire for a .223 600, then you'd at least get that if not more. Or you'll end up sitting on it until you realize that the market for a .223 600 isn't what your friend hoped for.

Large consignment dealers/auction houses with good reputations always bring significantly more than individual sellers. However, they usually don't mess around with wanting to sit on a gun and will start the bidding at .01. Add in their fee too. It is your gamble.
