remington 660 .243win

good day all:
i just purchased a remington m660 in .243win with a date code = feb 68.can anyone tell me these guns, are they accurate enough for 200-250yd coyote/deer hunting.
is the trigger adjustable and what would be a good load for the short 20"barrel.
also does anyone make a replacement trigger gaurd out of metal.

thanks Z

Re: remington 660 .243win

They are plenty accurate.

Heritage Arms makes a replacement triggerguard/floorplate out of machined steel with the same contours of the original plastic piece. Pretty much a drop-in fit. Brownells has 'em.

A fine deer/coyote load consists of a 95 Hornady SST bullet over 42.0 gr. of H4350 for over 3000mv from a 20" barrel. It's a max load in some rifles so start a little low. There are many others like it, but this one's mine

The plastic tip on the SST will allow it to expand well on a 'yote, yet it retains plenty of penetration for deer.

Re: remington 660 .243win

My 600 shot nickel sized groups all day every day with a pitted bore.

One unlucky coyote bit the dust around 250 yds, on an all out run.....first shot thru the neck, so happened my fixed 12x Redfield FOV was just right as the dog was on the far left of the view, and dropped....

Many crows and other things succumbed to the Mohawk. Heard one guy tell me with 85 BTHP Sierras, he shot deer from 40-400 yds and all died, usually on the spot or VERY close.

Short stiff tubes, actions truer than today's on average, they will most often shoot very well. Little loud and speed loss, but no big deal. They are handy.

Mine was an 18.5", but either way, I'd load an 85gr TSX Barnes and NEVER look back. NO deer, 'bou' or even elk or moose can take one good hit IMO. Its killed bear but I would not try stopping a charge with one. Enjoy.

IMR4350 was my go to powder, does well 70gr to 100 gr bullets, speed and accuracy. 4350 was my go to load for ALL 85-100 gr loads.

Dito on 6BR's comments.

I bought one in the PX in 1969 or 70 and have been feeding it Sierra 85gr HPBT for everything form crows to caribou ever since. My Dad was a solid .30-06 user and he laughed at me when I bought that little bitty gun, but it sure killed a lot of things over the years to include a few cow elk. If I could only have one rifle that would be in the running. The HPBT thru the ribs will do the job DRT!!
