So Cal
I need the help of “The Hide”. I have an old 700 PSS in .308 that I acquired in trade in an effort on my part to get into LR shooting. HS Precision stock, Badger M5. I had R+D Precision cut the barrel down to 20” - The Optic that came with the rifle is a USO ST-10 fixed 10x power, Mil-dot with 1/4 MOA turrets with ERGO AO.

I am finding the mil-dot too heavy to shoot groups at 100 yards very precisely. The center of the crosshair covers the X ring and the 10 ring. The lines look like they could them selves be a solid 1MOA. Obviously an optic made for hitting 2 legged varmints not paper. I really like shooting steal as well, and this optic works great for that out to 600 yards. I am torn between keeping it and just dealing with my 1.8 MOA results, or getting something new (variable zoom and finer reticle.)

I have been looking at all the MIL/MIL options out there. The “no math” argument seems pretty convincing. I have a friend that has a USO SN-3 3-17x Mil/Mil with Premier mil-dot Gen 2 - That thing is a beast. I want something like that but cant swing $2500.00 price tag.

I have been looking at the NF NSX 3.5-15x50with 1/10 MIL and MLR – and the Leopold 3.5-10x50 With M5 turrets. What else is there? I would like to stay under $2K and keep within the USO, NF, LEOPOLD, PREMEIR – IE top end scopes.

Any input would be appreciated.

Keep reading this forum section. You will find there are a lot of good choices in the mil-mil category. You did not mention if you wated a FFP reticle or not, but there are many good choices with that as well. My top recomendation right now would be the SWFA SS 5-20 ($1,500 retail and could be picked up used here for a bit less). Other manufaturers to consider include Vortex and Weaver, as well as a bunch of others I am forgetting right now. Also consider that if something is just out of your price range, you can hunt for a good used scope for a bit less $$.

I would keep reading here and learning about the possibilities before making a choice.

The F1 is Nightforce's FFP scope. The regular NF 3.5-15 is a SFP scope. My favorite scope is the F1.10 mil knobs and ZS are great features.

IMO...

IOR 6-24x56 3.5-18x50 are the best bang for the buck feature wise. The Gen 4 has a zero stop and push button illume with auto shut off.

SS 5-20 is next feature wise.No Zero stop.

Horus,Bushnell HDMR 3.5-21x50 is a great scope.Locking turrets,4 different mil reticle choices, including 2 Horus reticles.Spectacular glass and built very well! Heck,I'm so impressed I ordered two more.No illume though.

Leupy-over priced and not what they were 10-15 years ago.

Premier..no comment.

USO.I like em sorta but kinda heavy and pricey.Do not get the #1 knob for elevation,EREC only.

Re: Remington 700 .308 - Looking to switch optics-HELP

Give the guys at USO a call, one of the cool things about a custom scope builder is you can address the troubles you've been having and have them switch out your reticle to one with a finer cross hair. You can even have the turrets changed to MIL ones or have the reticle switched to a MOA one. If you went with a MOA reticle to match your MOA turrets I think you would like the RDP MOA.

It will be cheaper to have your USO wrenched on rather than buying a whole new scope. IMO. Depending on what part of CA you live in you might be able to drive over and visit their facility. They can hook up your scope the way you want and you can even have them adjust how stiff you like your click adjustments!

Thanks for all the info guys!

JF - I called USO a couple of weeks ago and they told me they could not change the turrets to MIL and it would be $400 to change out the reticle. I think I just got a grumpy person on the phone. They were not very helpful.

Anyway, I successfully sold the USO yesterday. I am going to jump into a USO SN-3 because I dont want to get away from the ERGO AO, I have trained myself to adjust the paralx that way none of the other options out there have AO. Also, I have heard good things about the EREK knob and want to try it out.

Plus the cost inst that much more than a F1 (if you can find one).

I wish they made a higher magnification scope but with a 50mm front objective instead of the 56.

I am running an IOR 3.5-18x50 and I have found that it is easy to do precision shooting the the modified mp-8 which has the dot. I could not be happier with the scope and the price. If interested contact Scott at Liberty Optics, he is not a grumpy guy.

Really? I mean really? Maybe a PM would be better than that drivel filled post. I run a couple NF's but I would certainly "TRUST" USO Premier or S&B if I was in the market for glass.

Keep it real.

If you want real reliability AND a price tag of under $2K, Nightforce is likely your best choice. I've found Nightforce to be the best bang for the buck in upper tier scopes; although I have to admit that I haven't yet had the opportunity to compare a 5.5-22X NF to an SWFA 5-20X.

For me, the lack of readily adjustable illumination hasn't been an issue. It was never meant to be a daylight bright illuminated reticle.
