Remington 700 .308 SPS Tactical - Handloads?

Hello to everyone in this forum! I am not new to forums, but definately new to this forum. I usually spend most of my time at m14forums.com, but after getting a hell of a deal on a bolt gun yesterday I finally decided to register. Here is my question and sorry if has already been asked or if there is an existing thread on it.

I handload for all of my M1As, Garands, etc. I am new to reloading for a bolt gun. I have everything I need for reloading .308, but I heard that I can now venture into heavier bullets...finally. I usually shoot 150-168 grain, but would like to try some heavier stuff. The twist rate is 1:10 on the 20" barrel...anyone here perfected a load yet for their 700? I know they are all different, but whats the heaviest bullets I can use beneficially out of this rifle? I have a private range in which I can shoot all the way out to 700 yards. I want a hard hitter for longer distances. Any help with relaod info, suggestions or recipes would be great. Thanks again.

yes it has been answered and you can pick from the 100's of answers in the "reloading" section where, after reading up on the bountiful information, one would post any remaining ?? on the subject

Re: Remington 700 .308 SPS Tactical - Handloads?

Welcome to the forum. I shoot a 700 1:10 twist, 20" barrel, so we have a similar rig. My favorite load is 178 gr AMAX with Win primers, Lapua brass, and Reloder 15 powder. This load gives me sub 1/2 MOA groups--about an inch @ 300 yards.

Thanks fellas...like I said, just needed to find out where everything is here. Set up a lot different than I am used to. Benny, have you ever shot anything heavier than a 178? I was looking at some of the Berger 200+ grain projectiles...why? Just cause, and because I could never shoot them though my 14's without modifications.

If your in central florida you should hook up with us and go out to Manatee. Ive got some pretty good 190smk loads with Reloader17. 208amaxs also work pretty good with RL17.

I live in Palm Coast...about 30 miles north of Daytona and 30 miles south of St. Augustine. I am mostly a service rifle and two/three gun guy, but now that I have a bolt gun I really want to perfect a load for her. I am still reading some of the stickys in the reloading section...great write ups but a little advance from what I have been doing. Great forum and TONS (literally) of info on everything you can imagine...where have I been!?

Re: Remington 700 .308 SPS Tactical - Handloads?

Welcome. Conventional wisdom says the 178 gr AMAX, 175 gr SMK, 185 gr Lapua Scenars are a good place to start. Load data is a plenty in the reload section, but varget would appear the most popular, and it definitely has my vote. Lots of varied opinions on brass primer and charge weight. Seating depth will depend on your rifle and how long the throat is.
