I know it all depends on the shooter, ammo, etc, but how far is the limit of range with this rifle? Ive wanted a DPMS 308 for some time, but the rifle I wanted to buy isnt going to be able to come home with me so I am now looking at bolt actions.

I have always been referred to the bolt action department any time Ive mentioned wanting a 308 for long range shooting, etc.

Anyone care to chime in and help me out? Thanks guys!

please mention or suggest any other 308 bolt action that you prefer.

I am looking at 600+ yards

First post here, long time lurker.

I've had no problems out to 800 with a 20" barrel on my 700. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot it any further, but I don't doubt I could reach 1000 with some time to work up dope for that range. You'll be pleased at how handy a 20" gun is vs. a 24-26" barreled rifle.

When I was researching the same question most folks suggested a 20" for out to 1000 yards max. And at that distance it seems like a heavier bullet (ie: 175 grain) is recommended. I ended up going with the 20" Remington 700 XCR Compact Tactical and couldn't be happier. So far I've only been sighting it in at 100 but I love the handiness of the short barrel.

LTR's are very nice! But if you are on a budget than the SPS Tactical will be the model to get. I prefer longer barrels so I purchased a SPS-V and had the 26" barrel cut to 24".. Its a pretty good rifle

Re: Remington 700 .308 with 20'' barrel

The .308 doesn't lose as much velocity/per inch of barrel like other cals. Some people say 10-20 fps an inch. So, total you would only be losing 60-120 fps for 6 inches less or barrel to sling around and less metal too! Sps tacticals are cool, but LTR's are very nice and light.
