So I see where a lot of guys are saying that the Remington Action isn't upto the challenge of handling the pressures of the 338 Lapua Mag but yet they are manufacturing the 700P in this caliber. I highly doubt a company like Remington would run that kind of risk with-out plenty of R&D. So my question would be if anybody knows what, if at all, Remington has changed to the action to make it stand-up to the task? I would like to built a somewhat budget 338 Lapua project but if it is worth going with a custom action rather that a Remington I will do it.

Snipedogg,

The Rem 700 long action will handle the 338LM chambering, even the older ones. I have built them using a Remington 700 long action (originally chambered in 300 WIN Mag). I know of one that I built that has over 1000 rounds down the barrel with no ill effects on headspace, bolt deformation, or throat erosion and still maintains 0.5 MOA accuracy for 5 shots.. Loads being shot are Black Hills Match equivalent ( no light loads). You'll here boths sides of the fence on this topic but I can tell you from experience the Rem 700 long action can and will handle the pressures and punishment doled out by the 338LM.

Hope this helped.

Thank you for the re-assurance shooter53, Is there anything that needs to be done to the action to handle the caliber, I've heard people say they mill the openings for DBM and ejection port, etc...

Re: Remington 700 338 Lapua Action ???'s

Having been bitten by the same 338LM "Bug" of late, I find myself in the process of assembling a "Poor Man's Lapua" as an entry level rifle, using a standard 700 action. Have found the answers to most of my questions, one place or another on this site, thanks to all the contributor's willingness to share their expertise. However one area I have not found any detailed information on, is the seemingly required changing of the extractor to either a "Sako Type" or "M-16 Type". ANY and ALL information with regard to "Who" "Where" "How" this can best be accomplished would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Snipedogg,

I also found on the Seekins website the print for trimming out the magazine port for the 338 length magazines to clear, and trimming of the bolt stop to let the bolt move rearward far enough to pick up the rounds. Midway didn't have all the Callahan pieces, but does show to have the Tubbs Sako Kits in stock.
I am completely new to all this "Bolt Gun" stuff, and have always done all my own machine work on my semi-beltfeds and FA stuff. So, don't have a clue as far as "Smiths" go. There is a thread running on this forum now titled "Gunsmiths you are impressed with" Loads of names and recomendations posted there. I would provide a "Link" IF I knew how to do it!

+1 on the TRG-42 I have shot one myself and it is what really convinced me to go the 338LM direction. I am all about having something unique even if I am on a budget.

FTF thank you for the information and I will definetly be finding me a reputable "smith" thanks to you and the Hide.

Yessir, the TRG 41/42 was my first true love many years ago, just couldn't/can't fade their price tag for an entry level, "Let's see IF I really want to do this" gun. AND, the worst shooting Sako on earth, would still perform alot better than I can operate it. Was going to get an MLR to do it on the cheaps, but they went up in a hurry, and the AR30 just doesn't ring my bell at all. So I figured I'd just see what I could put together on the scrounge. Actually I enjoy building the guns far more than shooting them anyway.

YMMV
Thanks,

Re: Remington 700 338 Lapua Action ???'s

Haha ya the price tag is really getting me, I'd rather build something and make it my own, but the Sako's do shoot extremely well. My goal is to build this soI can use it in the 1000 matches I participate in. I'm aware there are other calibers well suited for this distance but I also want something I can really stretch out given the opportunity.

Re: Remington 700 338 Lapua Action ???'s

I'm not completely sure on the caliber limit but we already have a couple of guys shooting 338's in the 1000yd matches. I'm just using my 308 and have actually beat a couple of guys with there 338's so I know with a caliber more capable at that distance I should see quite a bit of improvement
