I think this goes either here or perhaps gunsmithing

but my question(and first post to this forum) is this

I recently bought a Remington 700 SPS in 7mm rem mag and I wanted to know would it kill the action if I did some custom work(sako style extractor, truing, boring and adding sleeves) and got a barrel made for a .338 lapua magnum cartridge

Re: Remington 700 7mm Mag

I know it has been done, personally, I think you have to remove far too much metal from the bolt face to be safe.

I think a better bet is the .338 edge.

Re: Remington 700 7mm Mag

I guess I need to look into that one(since I have never heard of that caliber), but anyways if I could I would probably just do a .300 RUM but the thing is that caliber wont fit into the clip of the stock I want to use(the AICS from Accuracy International)

Re: Remington 700 7mm Mag

338 Edge = 338/300 RUM instead of a standard 338 RUM. Slightly more powder capacity is available in the Edge version for similar reasons to why the 7 WSM has more powder capacity than the 7/300 WSM does.

If you can get a 300 RUM case to work, the 338 Edge case will work, although some of the heavy 338 bullets are longer than the heavy 30 cal bullets so you may have magazine length issues.

I have a couple LA 700's that have internal mag lengths approaching 3.65", I don't know offhand how long the 300 RUM is.

Opening the rails to feed the 300 RUM from a mag action already isn't going to be too difficult. It could be done with a dremel tool if you really wanted, I'd do it with a milling maching, but that's just me.

Re: Remington 700 7mm Mag

Parent case________.404 Jeffery
Case type__________Rimless, bottleneck
Bullet diameter____.308 in (7.8 mm)
Neck diameter______.344 in (8.7 mm)
Shoulder diameter__.525 in (13.3 mm)
Base diameter______.550 in (14.0 mm)
Rim diameter_______.534 in (13.6 mm)
Case length________2.850 in (72.4 mm)
Overall length_____3.600 in (91.4 mm)
Case capacity______110.2 gr H2O (7.163 cm³)
Rifling twist______1-10"
Primer type________Large rifle magnum
Maximum pressure___65,000 psi (450 MPa)

that is all the casing specs on a .300 RUM

as for all that info in the .338 edge I have no idea

I think(for simplicty and availability) I may just go with the .300 RUM in my r700 and then buy a custom action for the .338 lapua magnum

Re: Remington 700 7mm Mag

well after measuring everything out and test fitting a .300 RUM round in the magazine(there is very little clearance left, and if i go with the .338 edge round I will very likely run into problems) so I am going to go ahead and have a barrel made for a .300 RUM and have a sako extractor put on the bolt(maybe?) or some other small things(maybe if I can get it blueprinted but I don't think its necessary for hunting purposes)
