I plan on purchasing my first rifle and I have been looking around for quite a while and I just can't pull the trigger and determine what I want to get. I have been looking at the Remington 700 ADL which sells for about ~$380 at Walmart which comes with a "trashco". I know glass is important and I have been looking at getting the Leupold VX-2 3-9x40 on the R700. However, I noticed that the stock on the ADL is pretty cheap and I would most likely have to get a Boyds' stock.

On the other hand, Bass Pro Shops has a Savage 111 with a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 BDC for about $540 (-$70 rebate) that I was somewhat interested in. However, I would most likely sell the scope and get a different one since I do not like the BDC reticle. I just need some guidance since I am looking to do some hunting this season and I have yet to decide what I want to get after a week. I am also open to other suggestions as well.

My budget is about $600-700 with a decent scope. I know it isn't that much and I shouldn't go cheap on guns, but this college tuition got the best of me.

I look forward towards some opinions and thank you ahead of time for taking the time to read this post!

Accuracy wise both are about the same.
You get a lot of options with the Remington for later, stocks, further customizations. Rebarelling would take up to 4 months though, unless you go with a savage barrel.
With the savage you get to take a lot of flack here. ;) You get the accutrigger which is unsightly to some but effective. You can also re-barrel it yourself towards a 308 later perhaps.

Frankly I would recommend a 308 since you are a member here, it's the predominant caliber of choice, you get a lot of ammo choices as well. In the same vein, I would also recommend the SPS or SPS tactical. You get slightly better accuracy and you get a lighter gun(SPS tac), which gives you more options later, because my hunch is there will be a later. At which point instead of selling your Savage/Rem ADL, you can refashion the SPS/SPS tac into that later gun.
Hope it helps.
Scope wise, what is the gun for?

Thanks for your reply perkantino. I did read that you get more customization options in the future with the Remington 700 ADL which is definitely a plus. The stock that comes with the Remington is pretty cheap. Therefore, that's why I was looking towards a Boyd stock since they do look extremely nice, but I wonder if it will have a tremendous affect on accuracy or not.

The accutrigger did seems nice when I gave it a try at Cabelas, but it isn't that big of a deal to me to sway me towards a Savage just yet

I wanted the .30-06 due to the fact that I will be starting my first deer season of hunting in Wisconsin and I will be mostly hunting in brush (Private land). I also did want something with less recoil so I wasn't sure for a while what I wanted. To be truthful, I haven't shot any bolt action rifles in .308 or .30-06 so I am not extremely familiar with them. However, I have shot plenty of .22's and 7.62x54 (Mosin).

I did look into the SPS, but I just can't get myself to spend $629 just yet since I would most likely be spending at least $800-900 with a 'decent' scope.

In regards to your scope question, the gun would be used for hunting. Not sure if this helps, but the way my stand is set up for the season I would only be shooting up to roughly ~80 yards max. If you have a suggestion about scopes, I am all ears. .

Scope wise then you are set, if it's just hunting ~80 yards. Less recoil would favor 308 over 30-06 by the way. I would say go with the ADL because you have more options, it's a more relevant action, and thus more resale value over time and more customization. But frankly given your use case, either would work.

I know it is one of the cheapest Remingtons one can get. Also, I was also thinking of getting the Brownell ADL-TO-BDL kit..after I get a feel for this gun.

I also saw a scope on the forum that someone was selling, it was a Leupold VX-2 6-18x40 for $400 I believe. Might look into that. As a beginner with a bolt action rifle would you suggest a .308 to someone instead of a 30-06?

.308 will have less recoil than the '06.
There are also managed recoil rounds available in both. Either one is an excellent choice for your deer.
Just get this and be done with it. Yes, you will eventually upgrade the scope and the stock, but to get you hunting, with a very good rifle that comes with a scope, this is hard to beat:
Howa Targetmaster Package 20" Hvy BBL 308 Black Hogue Stock $699.00 SHIPS FREE

Howa actions are VERY good, as are there stock triggers. The one piece bolt is far superior to the remington.
In the future, when you decide to start upgrading, B&C makes a couple of good stocks that you can look at, MCRee is supposedly releasing a chassis for it and XLR already has one.
