Gunsmithing Remington 700 Issue

I have an action from a Remington Sendero and used it for a build. I think there might be an issue with the holes for the scope bases.. I dont think they are aligned correctly.. I put the action on the mill and ran an indicator down the side of the base and they are not true to from end to the other.. Has anyone seen this before? it is so bad that I can not run a 20moa base. I have to run 2 piece bases with the adjustment in the rear... Is there a solution to this problem other than welding and redrilling? what would remington do if I sent it back to them?

Put it back in the mill and punch it 8/40

I already thought of that... Probably what I will do. I have never had an action like that before. the gunsmith that worked on it for me said he had never had one like that before.

I'd punch perfectly good holes 8/40....just because.

Thoughts:

Qualifying holes on top of the action isn't brain surgery. However it's easy to think something is askew when it isn't.

Quite a few dimensions on a firearm begin with the center of receiver bore. This case is no exception so it's best to begin there.

Your vise could in theory be indicated 45* off of the common axis so long as the hole in the receiver was straight with the machine. What I'm saying is indicating the rear jaw of the vise doesn't tell you anything about your action. It just tells you the vise is parallel with the machine (usually in "X")

Once you have this established it's then time to sweep the holes and record any shift in the opposing axis. (The "Y" in most cases)

This tells you if your holes are indeed out of location. If they are opening them to 8-40 is the logical solution provided that you don't just cram a drill down the existing hole. A drill is going to follow what's already there. So will a ream. It should either be bored or interpolated to ensure the center is where it should be.

Now that this is done you mount the bases. If they play nice then your done. If they are showing errors then you know the base is the culprit. Replace or repair accordingly.

We checked the vise before the action was ever put in it... just to make sure we were starting off square...

Use a center cutting end mill and open the holes accordingly only after the correct set up is established.

I appreciate all the help... Time to get it fixed as I have a new barrel coming in for it...
