Nightforce 3-15x50 would make a great optic for that rifle.
What's your budget and timeline by the way, the Vortex PST might be worth waiting for if you can wait until May/June.

Either one of the scopes you mentioned will be great on the LTR. It depends on your budget and what you really want. You will have members that are biased to the Nightforce and some that are biased to the Leupold.
I myself have 2 8.5-25x50mm LR/T M1 knobs for my 2 Police 700. A good friend of mine right down the road has a Nightforce and a Mark IV. I have shot with both and like both. No complaints here.

My time line is before I deploy again in September. I'd like to stay under $3000 for everything needed for the build. I'll never be taking far shots with it so I know I dont need a super power scope for it. Is 10X too much a 700 LTR?

How much magnification do you like at 1k? Thats about the range of the LTR in my experience (farthest hit, 880 yds). I run a USO 1.8-10 TPAL on mine. Good scope.

With either the Leupold or NF you cannot go wrong. I personally own both brands and own some other US Optics equipment and have used one once. This is just my opinion now but for the money you cannot beat NF. I know some people claim USO is better but personally I think a lot of the extra money spent is for the personal customibility of their product. When you buy a USO you are buying a premier personal preference scope. When you buy a NF you are buying a premier scope that is pretty much limited on options. So what do you want and what are you looking for? For me the NF answered my wants in a readily produced premier scope so I went with them. In the end you need to get behind as many as time and supply allow and decide. One mans wine is anothers vinegar you know. So have fun, take opinions witha grain of salt and enjoy

I'll never be shooting that far. In fact I doubt I'll ever need it for shooting past 500 yards. I just want something to punch paper and targets and to hunt with.

Nightforce 3-15x50 is more than enough scope will be perfect for what you want and if you ever get the chance or decide to expand your skill level by going farther you are already set up for that endeavor

That's what I said and 6 months later I have a GAP on order and a Premier in the mail to compare to my USO. Just a warning, this can be addictive.

I have LTR's in both .223 and .308.
I have VXIII 6.5x20x50 on both.
I love the rifles and love the scopes, but am currently waiting
on my NXS. I dont think you will go wrong either way.

Its a custom built 700 with McMillan A2 stock, 26" PACNOR handlapped SS supermatch 1 in 10 3 groove barrel close to the Sendero contour, tuned factory trigger, heavy recoil lug, Badger Ordnance bottom metal and Badger tactical bolt knob, with everything metal duracoated black. Brand new never been fired...it was something I had custom made by a local reputable gunsmith that I thought I wanted at the time, but ended up changing my mind on. So ive never fired it, and its just been sitting.

If you are never shooting past 500yards and also want to hunt to keep the weight down, i would definitely look at the 2.5-10x options from either NF or Viper PST when it comes out in June. I have a NF 2.5-10x32 and i love it. At 19oz it is a huge difference to the 30oz of the 3.5-15x50.

If you are truly going to keep it to 500 yards, you don't need a 20moa base. What are you going to need at 500 yards, around 4 mils give or take or 12 MOA with the 175 SMK at 2600?
My suggestion is to figure out what scope you want to use, find out how much elevation travel it has, and then run your ballistics to find out how much you will need at 500. My guess is you will be able to reach 500 with any scope and a flat base.

Sure you can get to 500 without a canted base. The canted base gives you the ability to go out further. With the mk4 or nightforce you will have enough up travel to use a 20moa base, there is no reason not to get one.

I have 2 LTRs in 308
One set up for hunting with a Zeiss 3x9
The other is set up for LR shooting with the MK4 Leup.
Both rifles are very accurate.
I use NBT 150s for hunting and 175FGMM for targets.
The 3x9 scope will get you to 400 easy.
The Leup MK4 6.5x20 will take you to 1000+.
The rifle with the Leup is too heavy to use from a climbing stand but will work well from box stands.
The LTR is a very good rifle for the money spent.

I need to save up my pennies for a Nightforce.

LTR is a great rifle. My current favorite.
Dont let the Leupy haters dissuade you, they make a quality optic for a fair price that is serving well in a lot of tough conditions. If you hear of more problems with Leupold, pls consider the huge difference in the number of scopes in the sample size.
I would guess that there are more Leupy's out there than most of the competitors combined. I prefer Schmidt, but if I am trying to buy a budget optic, I would call Scott and order a MKIV in a heartbeat. They work, and work well in my experience.
