How many of you have had to replace the extractor on the factory bolt and how often?

After about 3,000 rounds (best guess) I finally had to replace the one on my 700 5-R Milspec. Actually didn't really have to replace yet, it was just starting to give some resistance when closing the bolt which went away when I replaced it.

Just to keep it short, I have no intention to replace it with a Saco style extractor, was just interested in what other's experience has been with the original. Mine is the "rivetless" type so it was no big deal. I decided long ago to add a spare to my "kit" so I had it on hand.

Look forward to hearing other's experience as to how long one usually lasts.

Re: Remington 700 owners

I was just wondering, is the extractor on 308 the same as 300 WM ? .223? Or are all they all different?

OP makes good suggestion, get a spare

Re: Remington 700 owners

Sometimes the factory extractor's shave a little brass and it builds up under the extractor itself which causes the resistance and sometimes the failure. A good cleaning of the bolt face with air will help keep it functional. The spring action needs clearance to function properly.

Re: Remington 700 owners

extractors are not made to be constantly taken on and off, i was told to that whenever you take one off you have to scrap it and get a new one, i have 4 reminton 700's and i havnt had any problems with any of the extractors.

Re: Remington 700 owners

The extractor on the r700's i have owned all work like a charm. What i do is clean under the extractor like mentioned above where brass and so forth can collect under it but thats about all i do to mine and no problems.

Re: Remington 700 owners

The extractor's on my Remington's have never caused me any problems. I would add that my round count is less than 1000 on them though.

Re: Remington 700 owners

Im coming up on 5500 rounds through my 700. I can't remember any problems with extraction. Do you clean your rifle? Oil it? Tooth picks and brushes are helpful.

Re: Remington 700 owners

Benchrest shooters usually remove it and replace it with a Sako style extractor. They don't like shaved cartridge bases.
I won't replace mine on my HS Precision .300 win mag B/C I'm likely selling soon it to get a DTA rifle and two barrels.

NOBODY but Remington uses their style of extractor. It's cheap to make and install and that's the only reason it's there.

Well there's always the fact that they work to.
