Is this cut out section in the receiver factory original or has someone worked it over?

Supposedly mid 60's production and on this gun:

Thanks in advance.

Re: Remington 700 receiver question

I'm very old myself and have never seen one like it. Maybe it was cut to load a very long case. Others will let you know for sure. What is it chambered for.

Re: Remington 700 receiver question

Check out the M40A1 build thread for other examples of stripper clip cutouts. The stripper clip cut for the M40A3 is very similar, even though the cut isn't used for stripper clips but for support for the scope base.

Very nice rifle you have there.

Re: Remington 700 receiver question

stripper clip slot. Though the last rifle I had that used one, the slot wasn't straight like that...more T shaped, where the top part of the "T" was a grove that the clip fit in.

Re: Remington 700 receiver question

The cut doesn't look like the right shape for factory and all factory sloted receivers I've seen also have a half moon cut in the front for clearance for the bullet tips.

It's not mine...yet. I'm hoping to get this soon. If I get it I'll post some more pics and a range report.

I just called a local smith this morning who said remington used this action with the clearance cut for belted magnums in the 60s. He said the extra length was for loading the biggest belted magnums, but wasn't needed on the 7mm. Pretty much what was posted on the firingline in the link I posted earlier.

Re: Remington 700 receiver question

I have a 270 thas just like that, never could find any info on it. I do know that it has to be a factory deal, it was bought new by my grandpa and it is stamped model 700. Other than that i have always wondered what it was for?

Re: Remington 700 receiver question

Both of my short action Rem 700's have that cut, one is a five digit serial the other a low six digit. The cut I believe was for a proprietary stripper clip guide that attached, I had one milled out to look like the traditional stripper clip cut, this is one of at least three different cuts that came on early factory Remington 700 's. Your rifle has a short boot shroud and early high safety so i would assume its an early rifle, it also has the two screws on the left side of the receiver for attaching sights.

It's definitely a model 700. It says so on the side of the receiver. I won the auction so I should have it shortly before Christmas.
