i recently picked up this rifle and was curious about the twist rates of different set ups. i know that the faster twist will help stabilize heavier bullets than the 1:12 twist in the standard sps tactical, but are there any down sides to the faster twist rate? i read that barrel life may be shorter, but is that true, and what kind of barrel life would someone expect out of this rifle compared to the 1:12 twist barrel? are there any down sides to shooting light weight rounds through the 1:10? I recently bought a good amount of the xm80c ammo at 149gr. if i am not mistaken i thought that .308 is generally not too harsh in regards to barrel life compared to some of the other long range calibers, how accurate is that belief? thanks for any help

You already bought the ammo, shoot it. It won't hurt anything, but its not likely anything would shoot cloverleafs with it, 2MOA would probably be considered good. You aren't likely to see enough appreciable difference in barrel life because of twist to decisive. .30 cal is forgiving, for most peoples purposes, 1:10 and 1:12 are both perfectly suitable for normal velocity .308 loadings of 150-180gr, the 1:10 in a .308 came about for shooting heavy bullets slow thus its also threaded for ease of suppressor installation.

A .308 will generally give you around 4 to 5k barrel life as long as your not over zealous with cleaning. You could use the xm80c ammo for practice and reload for accuracy.

There is no "ideal", each barrel will shoot some bullets better than others.

Due to limited case size, the 175 hpbt or 178 amax are normally the best choice for long range (in excess of 600 yards).
Some folks shoot the 208 amax, but most likely would have best results out of a longer barrel.

The 155 palma is also good for long range, the 168 is pretty standard. Several companies make excellent 168 class bullets

well got to do some shooting with my new set up. havent shot .308 in many years, and had to break the barrel in a bit, along with sight in the scope. i fired 30 rounds of this ammo and overall it wasnt too bad. it grouped better than i had expected. i didnt have the time to set up my longer range location so i just used my area that was more convenient and it ranged at 55 yards. i could typically get two shots within half inch and sometimes touching with the a third shot stretching the group to a full inch. although my very last group was about 3/4" center to center and right on target. i picked up a winchester 9-13 bipod at Walmart to hold me over so i shot with that up front and just my shoulder out back. im gonna fill up a nice sock with some rice for next time, and also sight her in at 100 yds and of course some good match ammo. i was a bit rusty with the big gun. im sure down the road ill have the itch to put her in a nice hs precision stock too.
