Remington 700 SPS tactical...

Hey all, its been a while, had a question and thought Id pop in and catch up on some reading.
I am looking to get another 700, and while looking came onto the sps tactical. Pretty cheap rifles.
Whats the skinny?
This would be more of a fun gun, for my sons or my wife, so Im not looking to spend what I did on my other long range sticks.
Are they worth it?
Any issues?

I searched but for some reason nothing came up?!

Thanks in advance for any help or info.

Re: Remington 700 SPS tactical...

i like mine...i've got one in 223 and one in 308 and they are accurate and no problems so far. they do the job for me. the stocks are the only thing i really heard complaints about, but mine is still accurate with it and im about to start doing work on mine anyways. jmo

Re: Remington 700 SPS tactical...

I am very pleased with my SPS Tactical. Mine is the .308 by the way. I got it real cheap, and expected to have to do a lot to it in order to get it firing good. This did not turn out to be the case and I have a 1MOA firing gun right now with match ammo. Not spectacular, but for the amount that I have invested into the gun, I am pleased. I think that for the money it will be hard for you to get a better rifle.

Hmmmmmm....
Thanks guys! </div></div>

depends...

I too have one of each and both shoot under moa. Gennerally around 3/4 or less with hand loads. The factory stock is ok. but does touch the barrel if shooting with a bipod. The futher out you go the more stringing you will see because of that. Change the stock and it shoots properly again.

Re: Remington 700 SPS tactical...

Yes, they're sub-MOA. Like anything else, you have to do your part.

Here are some 5-shot, 100 meter groups from my SPS-T during a shoot of some final hand-load tests. All I did in the accuracy department was replace the Hogue stock with a bedded B&C Light Tactical.

Thanks. It kinda makes it hard to justify my Stiller TAC30 build!

Re: Remington 700 SPS tactical...

glock24, what are the loads that shot the last two groups on the right? I'm working on final loads now for my .308 SPS-V using 168 SMK bullets. I've replaced the factory stock with a B&C A2 Medalist Tactical stock.

I've narrowed my choices down to 42.5 grains of RE-15; 43.5 grains of Varget; 42.5 grains of H-4895 and 43.5 grains of WW-748. R-P cases & an OAL of 2.800".

If your bullets/powders/loads are different, please provide details.

You're actually looking at the same load, just different bullet seating depths. Yes, it is that important.

I settled on 175g SMKs on top of 44.5 grains of Varget. The best part is I finished my load testing with less than 40 rounds. I learned it all by reading Dan Newberry's OCW method. The man is a bad-ass.

Here are my specifics if you can ignore the side conversation in the thread.

2550 fps.

Slower than I wanted, but it still gets me to 1000. Accuracy before velocity, right?

Re: Remington 700 SPS tactical...

glock24, thank you for the data. I'm actually trying to be in the 2500 ~ 2600 FPS range which seems to be a sweet spot for the 168 grain SMK bullet from all I've been able to find out.

I've bookmarked Dan Newberry's OCW page and I'll be studying it ASAP. Thank you also for the other link. I'll let you know what I finally settle on.

Good deal.

Let me know if you have questions, or post them in the Reloading section of this website. Many here use the OCW method and can advise you on the details.

Try some IMR 4064 behind the 175s. I get another 100fps getting me to 2625-2650 with it in my SPS-T.

I think your on to something, 2548fps was my adv using your load and it is shooting tight little clusters!

Re: Remington 700 SPS tactical...

Two guys from my department wanted to pick up an inexpensive rifle system they could use for target shooting/hunting for dear and hogs. They ended up picking up two SPS tactical in 20" with Nikon 2.5x10x40 monarch scopes with the BDC reticle.
Took both rifles out to the range and zeroed them at a 100yds. Couldn't believe they both shot almost .5 moa with 168 grn Hornady tap rounds right out of the box. The scopes were also spot on using the bdc reticle at 200 and 300 yds. Had me scratching my head why I spent so much on my custom.
I suggested they either bed the rifle or change to a better stock and bed them but they were more than happy with the configuration and didn't want to change a thing.

Re: Remington 700 SPS tactical...

Thanks for the input guys.
I purchased one yesterday, and have already started putting it together on the cheap.
My rings will be in early next week, and I will make sure to do a out of the box review.
Out of everything Ive read here, and other places, the stock is the main concern.
We will see.

Re: Remington 700 SPS tactical...

two me the plastic stocks are the down falls. and i don't think the Hogue is all that much better. find a H-S stock or just get a plain sps-v and cut the barrel down to your liking.
my sps-v in .223, 26" barrel now cut to 18.5" and ex-PSS stock makes one ragged whole.

Good deal!

Everyone tells me 45.0 grains of Varget is where it is at with 175g SMKs. That wasn't true for me, but it was true for both of my buddy's SPS-Ts.

I'd recommend that you at least explore that space, and also tweak your bullet depth a bit, especially if your clusters look like they might be stringing up-down, sideways, or diagonal.
