So, I currently own a Remington 700 SPS Varmint chambered in .308 that has been cut down to 19". The Remington sits in an XLR Evolution chassis and sports either my Weaver GST 3-10 or my PST 4-16 depending on how I feel the day I shoot. I was able to score a Savage 10TR .308 and now I sit at a crossroads on which rifle to go with. I wished there were a way to know the accuracy potential of the Savage without shooting it so that if I do decide to let it go I could say it were unfired.
Anyways, what are you guys thoughts on these two rifles? Both are known to perform. My original thoughts after picking up the Savage was to sell the Remington and XLR and upgrade the Savage with an XLR Carbon Chassis. My pockets are far from deep so money is a big factor. Does the 5r barrel alone make the decision making process sway one way? The thought of a threaded barrel that I could potentially change out for another caliber is very appealing, but will the action on the Savage be better off with truing? If so then this placing me near the same cost of reworking a Remington action.
I know so little of the Savage 10 platform and have been reading so much that my brain hurts. Pretty much the only real world experience I have with the Savage 10 is my dad's .223 that sits in an XLR chassis and he consistently shoots .5 MOA or less at our 300y range. (wind permitting) Does anyone know who makes the 5r barrels for Savage?
