i've been a lurker for a while now just trying to learn some stuff to improve my shooting. i ran across a deal on a 308 rem 700 sps varmint and decided to buy it. some winchester super x 150gr ammo came with it and i shot 10 rds. i was shooting prone with a bipod and this thing was kicking the crap out of me and the muzzle was jumping so bad that i would lose sight of the target momentarily.

i guess my question is, does this sound like a form issue or is it normal ?

Luke

Re: remington 700 sps varmint recoil

308 is at best a mild recoiling round. It sounds like two things would help. First off work on your form. Correct form will cure 90% of what you describe. Then look at changing a few things on the rifle. Things like an adjustable comb and buttplate come to mind.

More than likely two issues.

First is the butt not seated in the pocket.

Second is the body not lined up with the axis of the bore.

My wife weighs about a buck fifty and can shoot a .308 700 with no issues, but she has be standing behind her reminding her about her form while she is learning.

I have one as well, I tend to concur with what the others said, make sure you're getting it tight in your shoulder, personally I despise the factory stock and will be replacing it eventually. It does seem to recoil quite differently than the sporter barreled rifles I'm used to, almost straight back with hardly any muzzle rise which took some getting used to. BTW mine shoots 168 A-Max Hornady factory loads amazingly well, 3 or 4 shot groups under an inch at 200yds, one ragged hole if I do my part at 100. Good luck with your new rifle, have fun, and its a 700 so you can overtime change anything you want.

Re: remington 700 sps varmint recoil

It's probably form. Do you have a decent cheek weld? I'm a small dude, less than 130, and I find the recoil to be very mild, perhaps even light. Make sure you have a good cheek weld and form, and you should be ok.

Re: remington 700 sps varmint recoil

thanks for all the feedback everybody.i've read over the "Fundamentals of Marksmanship" by jhuskey several times. i've also watched hours of shooting on youtube and what i'm seeing there is not the same as what i'm experiencing. i do most of my shooting alone so i'm missing out on the advantage of having somebody critique my form. guess i could video myself then work on what i see wrong.

Re: remington 700 sps varmint recoil

just went out to clean my rifle from last nights shooting and did some dry firing at a nail in the light pole out at the road. i then realized that my head is really high. so i guess i need a cheek pad.

Re: remington 700 sps varmint recoil

Sometimes if your bipod is too low, like a bench rest height, and you're shooting prone, you can't get your shoulder low enough to get the proper placement of the butt against your shoulder and it has a tendency to make the rifle jump upwards upon discharge.
