Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I have a Remington 700 and am interested in upgrading the trigger. Looking around on here I have found a few Timney triggers that look interesting and am curious to those who have used them.

I am interested in the Timney 510 and 512 but I also liked the look of the straight trigger which are Timney 517 and 517-16. Are there any pros or cons to a curved or straight trigger? Any other suggestions or options I should consider with a new trigger? Thanks for the help.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I like my 510, simple install, easy adjust, great feel. If the straight one is the same internals I'm sure its good too.

Other options include Rifle basix, Jewel, and Jard, probably others as well, I've no experience with these but a little searching will reveal much no doubt.

I appreciate it. I will look into those. I'm leaning towards the straight but we will see. Thanks again.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I know the Timney goes from 1.5-4 and I was thinking about ~2 lbs. Have you had any issues with less resistance? I know there is hesitancy of most with light triggers because of their sensitivity but I would like to try it for accuracy.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I just ordered a Timney 510 for my R700 SPS Tac from Primary Arms during this weekends Memorial weekend sale 10% off.

My rifle is a in .223 and tack driver with my hand loads .5 MOA or better with 5-8 different loads I have tested.

I opted to go with a B&C stock as my first upgrade. Working with the stock X-mark trigger. I had the pull set to 2.5 pounds on a borrowed scale but noticed it wasn't holding very well appeared to get heavier over time.

I did some reading and found that to be a consistent complaint regarding the stock trigger so at this point decided to upgrade.

Looking forward to getting it in a couple days.

Right on. I upgraded my stock first as well. I went with a AICS AX stock, upgraded my optics to a Leupold Mark 4 8.5-25x50mm, just recent purchased a Harris Bipod, and now looking into the trigger system.

So far it has been accurate. I wouldn't say .5moa but probably around or a shade under 1 moa if I had to guess. I am just hoping for that last little bit.

Haven't tried at a lower pull setting than 2lbs. 2.5lbs is pretty light for my rifle and perfect for what I do. Didn't really notice a big difference between 2 and 2.5lbs but just felt the pull was better where I have it now. Once I felt it was where I wanted it measured the pull and found it to be 2.5lbs, about where I originally was looking for.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I have a Timney 510 on my 700AAC, absolutely love it. Set at 2.5 lbs, it's much more crisp and consistent than that crappy x-mark trigger it came with.

+1 to the Timney!

Also, like Beef said, very simple install. Only took about 10 minutes and 3 simple tools.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

Botach Tactical was cheaper as well and free shipping. I ordered through them but it turns out its on back order with no ETA for the 517. I requested a cancellation and I'm likely going to order straight from Timney to try to speed the order up.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I see you (OP) grabbed the 517; that is what I have and I love it. I bought both the 510 and 517 and just really liked that straight drop.

I went with the Timney factory setting at 1.5#. It is safe, but man it is light!!!

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I figured that might be a little low so I am going to try to go for 2 to 2.5lbs. Maybe I'll try lighter if I'm going to be more stationary shooting.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I just installed the Timney 510 that I ordered from PA tonight on my Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .223
Install was straight forward. Took me about 30 minutes, it fit perfectly into the factory bottom metal. I even gave the action a thorough clean. The trigger supposedly came with a default setting of 3 pounds. I turned out the trigger weight adjustment screw one full turn and it seemed a little too light for me. I turned it back in 1/2 turn. I like the wide shoe gives me good feel with my stubby index finger with wide fleshy pad. I can feel my finger is centered on the trigger without looking now.
I'm going to load up some proven .3 MOA 50g varmint loads and do some testing Sunday. I'll borrow the trigger scale from the gunsmith at the range and get a baseline on where it is right now. I would think right around 2.5 pounds but could be higher. If it is... it definitely feels lighter with the wide shoe.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I just ordered the 517 directly from Timney and selected the 2lbs preset. I figure I'll try it without adjusting it at what the factory considers 2lbs before adjusting up or down.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I put the Timney 517 with a factor 2lb setting into my 700. The trigger makes it feel like a completely different weapon. The motion is so crisp and clean. I am amazed at how much the trigger helped!

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I have a Timney in my 700 and love it--it is curved. I have a straight trigger in an AR10 and like it too--don't have a preference on the shape.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

Yeah this was my first straight trigger and I really enjoy it. I doubt I'll expand the flat trigger to my other weapon systems but its neat on this one.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I run a Jewell in my 308. It is used mainly at the range, so its at 1lb. If your hunting or shooting tactical matches the timney at 2-2.5 is a great choice. Can't comment on straight vs curved as I only own curved.

Re: Remington 700 Trigger Options?

I would assume 1lb would be a little light for hunting and tactical. The 2lb is right on the edge. It has enough resistance I wouldn't accidentally fire it, but so little resistance that it feels effortless. And I can't complain about either straight or curved, but in this case I think the straight is really cool.
