Remington 700 upgrade question

I have some extra cash and want to either upgrade my optics or true my action and rebarrel. I have a Remington SPS Varmit in .308 that shoots well for factory gun with an aftermarket trigger(Timney) and stock (B&C). The rifle currently has a Millet LRS 4-16x50 and it's ok, but not the greatest I've ever seen. I'm looking for some feedback as to which one of these upgrades will make the biggest improvement to my current rifle.

I use this gun to punch paper at the range out to 500 yards and kill pigs/varmits at my lease. In reality the gun in it's current state probably serves my needs well, but I've got the money and want to upgrade.

How well is shoots well? Sub MOA, sub 1/2 MOA, etc? If it was me and it was consistantly a 1/2 to 3/4" shooter I'd shoot it till its groups start opening up then drop the change on the gunsmith work then, and buy the scope now instead.

Re: Remington 700 upgrade question

you can never go wrong with good glass. If your rifle shoots "good" whatever your interpretation of that is, then don't worry about a new barrel. My factory rem my barrel was more than adequate at 500 yds. Id say get a better scope/rings/base. And a torque wrench... Bet you'd be happy

(Rifle) Don't fix what's not broken.
(Glass) Don't get me wrong, I have a Millet LRS on a RRA 20" Varmint 223. I like it but, the Viper would be a major step up.

Just my .02.

Re: Remington 700 upgrade question

This are the last two groups I shot at one hundred yards two weeks ago after resetting my zero to test the repeatability of my scope. With my reloads I can shoot groups like this all day if I'm doing my part.

I purchased a new set of Warne Steel Rings from another board member and have recently puchased a torque wrench to insure proper torque on the gun and scope rings.

My wife uses a 6-24X50 vortex viper PST (SFP). She enjoys it. Vortex has great customer service too.

Your rifle seems to shoot well enough. Are you reloading? If not, an investment into reloading equipment and developing a new load would trump getting a new scope or barrel work done.
