I am very new to any shooting out past reasonable deer hunting ranges. 200-300 yards max.
I have several AR's and a few pistols. The only semi-long range rifle I own is a Remington 700 VTR in 308. It has a Zeiss Conquest 6.5X20X50 scope on it, with Harris bipod.

Does this combo have any long range potential? Or should I start saving for a better rifle/scope?

I plan on having the reticle swapped for a mil-dot, unless there is a different reticle zeiss offers that you guys think I should try.

Local range only has berms for 300 yards anyway, so I will need to find a different range, etc

Re: Remington 700 VTR ?

At the very least put a new stock on it. Mine shoots very nice with a new stock. I just put a RB trigger on it but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. They are real picky about ammo also.

Do a google search on stocks. There are more than this list
You should look at them all, get behind them to see what you like
What kind of features you want? How much do you want to spend? These are just the popular ones
McMillan: are the top choice, but too expensive and a long wait
Manners: love the thumhole and not as expensive as McMillan
Bell& Carlson: A2, A5 adjustable are popular
Stockade: ???
H&S:Has alot of models to choose from
Chote????

New stock.. New trigger..

MAke sure if you get a new stock you pillar bed it and it has
some free float.. After that you'll see a worlds difference.

Depends on the model. The 2.0 folding stocks are more, but the 1.5 fixed models are about $850 (for short actions). Personally I like the folders, but then again I'm pretty happy with a fixed stock too.

Yes, good move.

Last weekend a gent had a VTR that started showing strange groups. After a bit we found the stock was touching the barrel at the tip of the stock. Upon further investigation the stock itself had cracked around the action.

He returned the next day with a LTR and life was better.

I believe the VTR stock is actually designed to put pressure on the barrel at the tip of the stock; there's a raised area at the front that contacts the bottom of the barrel.
