Gunsmithing Remington 700p DM problems

Having some functioning problems with 2 700p rifles manufactured in 1997. They are in HS DM stocks and we are using the original magazines. The problem is with the magazine inserted, some of the time the bolt will not go forward. This had only been a problem with the first round not chambering but the other day it happened after the 2nd round from the mag. The bolt is just plain stuck in the rear position and will not go forward until the mag is removed and reinserted.

Had called Reminton a while back and they said this problem is why they stopped using DM systems in 700P rifles from 1999 until about 2005. When I called this morning they said they don't know of any problems and it must be bent magazine lips. I have checked them, they are not bent.

With this issue on the table we are discussing replacing the rifles. I am also wondering about round count before replacement. Remington says they have no opinion. Accuracy has not really suffered that muich but we are at almost 20,000 rounds down the original tube. These rifles are "in service".

Any suggestions?

Re: Remington 700p DM problems

sounds like your spring in the mag is screwed up? Maybe give HS Prec a call. Probably be able to help you better than rem

Re: Remington 700p DM problems

This isn't a HS problem this is a factory Remington DM problem and yes they left a lot to be desired.

With 20,000 rounds I would consider replacing the entire rifle since it has the factory DM set up which is in a word crap.

That being said the factory DM receiver is always going to be a DM receiver meaning you can't make it a BDL, it will always need to use a DM mag system either factory, HS, Badger, or some other.

If you wanted to keep the rifles you have but change to another DM set up you will need a new stock that will accept HS drop in mag system or get the stock cut for Badger or one of the other larger DM set ups.

This option in itself is going to cost some money in new stocks and DM set ups, this is why I recommended just changing out the rifles.

Re: Remington 700p DM problems

I have a factory PSS-DM action and have to concur with HateCA that the system is more novelty that practicality.

I am currently able to use ADL/BDL stocks since I got SO pissed at that action that I hacked one of the magazines apart (i.e. cut the bottom off of one) and used the remaining mag box with ADL/BDL followers and springs. Worked perfectly in a UARS (blind mag) stock and will be installed in a BDL style stock in the next day or two.

Sometime soon I will test a Wyatt's centerfeed mag box and eventually their DBM system to see if it will work with the PSS-DM red headed bastard stepchild action.

Re: Remington 700p DM problems

Thanks for the replies guys. I called both Remington and HS and naturally neither would admit there is a problem with the design and both blame each other.

I recommended two new rifles to replace these 13 year old problems. We'll see....

Re: Remington 700p DM problems

I have several 700P DM rifles. Had them for years and don't have any issues with them. One is a 300 WM, one is .308 and one I re-barreled to 7mm-08. There is only one issue I had long ago and I figured out the trick to these beasts. The aluminum bottom metal has slots that hold the mags in position flush against the bottom of the stock. Over time they will wear or get bent and will cause the mag to get out of position and cause feeding issues. The simple fix is to keep the slots adjusted so the mags are held in the correct position. I use a mallet and brass drift to tap the bottom of the mag well LIGHTLY, and keep fitting the mag until it is snug against the bottom of the stock. If you want, send the bottom metal to me and I'll adjust them and send them back to you. Gratis of course.

Re: Remington 700p DM problems

GgRuff. I certainly appreciate the offer. They are company guns and the company might not like that. I would love to be rid of the problem, but I'm hoping for new rifles out of the deal. I think its time anyways. If they keep the promise of new work guns, the rifle will probably become mine for very cheap. I'll PM you for the adjustment if all of these dreams come true.
