Hey, I've been searching the forums and reading up on the builds of different setups. I'm new and looking for a complete setup for about 1,200$ give or take but I'm pretty set on a Remington 700 .308 caliber.

My question is which would be better or is there really that much of a difference between Rem 700P, 700 SPS Varmint, 700 VTR.

I want to be able to work up to shooting at up to 800 yards, then when I want to go over I'll worry about changes then. This is more just for shooting rather than hunting. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Remington 700P Equivalent

Stick with the 700p or sps. They are the same barreled action with external coating and triger being the only difference. The 700P also has a HS precision stock that a great start. I'm guessing your saying that $1200 needs to cover the scope, rings base, and other goodys? In that case, Either look for a used 700P or get the SPS in either the varmint or Tactical. There are a few good scope options that would then keep you in your price range. 800 yard with either of those would be no problem.

If you're set on a Remington, check out Sniper Central's package:

Your exact budget too almost.

From what Ive read, its a great setup. Good action and barrel, great stock, decent scope, good ring and base, great bipod and comes with a case too.

I joined this forum set on a Remington 700p as well with the exact same budget as yourself.

A few members talked about Howa 1500 rifles and I have since dropped my desire for a R700 and now I want a Howa and be ordering everything for one next week.

Be sure to post pics whenever you get your rifle! I love seeing what us budget guys can come up with.

Re: Remington 700P Equivalent

yeah I have a 700p 308 with mark4 bases and rings with a falcon menace scope. I believe i spent a lil over 1200 total. a big expense was the bases and rings, I got them at a really good price but still I think I spent at least 200 on them together. you can definitely build a good gun for that price range and theres alway room for improvements and upgrades. so just shop around and spend what you can afford now and add to it later. thats what Im doing. falcon menace is a good scope and not killer on the wallet.

Re: Remington 700P Equivalent

Hm, I like the 700 on snipercentral. Do the bases and rings really cost that much? I thought the thing that would cost the most if not the gun itself would be the scope.

For a scope I was thinking of getting a SS but if somethings cheaper and just as good I'd go for that too. All of the help is appreciated and I'll definitely be sure to post pictures of it when it's all said and done.

Re: Remington 700P Equivalent

What I did was go with the 700 SPS Varmint. It has the exact same barrel, action and trigger as the 700P, minus the HS Precision stock. I sold the stock and bought an HS right away. It actually cost me less to do that than buy a 700P for practically the exact same rifle. Also, it gives you options to the style and color of the stock you want.

As for the scope, I use a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x with Mil-Dot reticle. You can get them for less than $200 and they are a great value. Comes with windage and elevation knobs with 1/4 MOA adjustments. SS scopes are also a great value for the money.
