I know that Remington barrels generally have longer throats but the barrel on my 700P seems a little extreme. The max OAL with a bullet in the lands is 2.925. This is a jump of .07" for the 175 SMK when it is loaded to my mag length. The gun shoots great, action has been blueprinted and everything is squared up. I am just wondering if this will affect the performance of the barrel in the long run. Are there any problems with jumping a bullet that far?

Re: Remington 700P Throat Question.

I know conventional wisdom dictates less bullet jump equals better accuracy... to a point. But Steyr SSG's have a notoriously long distance between the chamber and the rifling and are extremely accurate so I'm personally not sold on conventional wisdom. I'd say it varies from rifle to rifle and if it performs well don't sweat it.

Re: Remington 700P Throat Question.

Well, accuracy is not a problem with it. Right after we installed the barrel I shot two 5 shot groups that were both under .4 MOA with Hornady ammo. With my handloads it should do great. I just didnt know if the extreme jump was bad for the barrel.
Thanks.

Re: Remington 700P Throat Question.

I've got a Rem.5R (bedded, trigger, etc) that has almost .200" (not a typo.... over 3/16") of jump when loaded to mag length that will shoot 1/4" groups off the bags.

The throat should last a lot of rounds!

Re: Remington 700P Throat Question.

I have a 257Wby that when I shoot 75 grain V-Max's out of it they are jumping over .450" and it shoots an slightly enlarged hole for 5 shots. .2" groups with a factory Weatherby barrel. My old 22-250 is over 7000 rounds now and I can't get anywhere near the rifling and it shoots everything well and what it likes into .2" or better.
