Just picked up a remington 700 VS in 308 and wanted to get some input on this rifle. have yet to shoot it and wanted to know if anyone has any experience with one. How well do they shoot, and overall experience. I know I am going to swap out the heavy trigger with a timney I think. All input is appreciated.

Re: Remington 700VS reports

My first remington was a VS in 308 and it shot great.. Then I spent a bunch of money on a MCM A5 and then sent it off to GAP to get rebarreled and bedded, I quickly figured out that I couldnt shoot the GaP any better than I could shoot the VS.. It was my skill that was lacking Not the GAP..

I had a rifle-basix trigger in it and I liked it a lot. Get a badger 20moa base and some seekins rings or burris tactical rings then a Super Sniper or bushnell elite mildot or something similiar. It will be a great gun if you want to learn how to start shooting long range.

Re: Remington 700VS reports

My M700 varmint special is a .223.

I found out early on though that if I missed a ground hog's head (head shots only) it was my fault. That rifle didn't miss. I never shot it past 225 yds but to that point it is/was (may have another rifle now that could compete with it but need to get out and check it out)the most accurate rifle I've ever shot.

Re: Remington 700VS reports

Chamber was ruff, bolt throw is sticky at times, after my first 300 rounds accuracy improved dramatically, shoots poorly on a clean barrel, not cleaned since my 500th round and has 1200 plus now with no degrading of accuracy. I had 850 down the tube when these targets were shot.

Five shots at 100 with Federal GMM on quarter inch line graph paper.

I added HS Stock solely because it was a bolt on with the alum block and a 6 week wait, added 1800 steel BBs to the butt, replaced butt pad with Limbsaver, Rifle Basix LV1-K trigger set to 1#, Seekins 20moa bases with rings, SS10x scope. The #1 thing outside of time on the trigger that helped me with accuracy was in fact the RB trigger that breaks clean every time unlike the xMark and last time on a gauge it still breaks at 1#.

Good luck!

Re: Remington 700VS reports

Hey 45.308 the rifle I just got already has the HS stock. Was this how it came from the factory? I was told it was a VS but the seller is trying to locate the original box for me. The stock is black with painted webbing on it. I am sure it is a HS stock. Now I am wondering if it is a VS or another model. If not a VS then what model is it?

Re: Remington 700VS reports

I have had very good luck w/ a older one (honest sub 1/2 moa made in the early 90s) and good luck (3/4 moa) new one. The good news is if it doesnt shoot to your expectations its a good starting point. Good luck!

I was not aware the VS came in 308, was thinking plain jane 700 Varmint which is what I have when you said 308 and you just got it.

Re: Remington 700VS reports

i have one in 220 swift , the older black barreled model, use it for shooting fox's at night . i put a timmney trigger in as well.its a pure tack driver and never had a single problem with it.put good glass on it and you have a straight shooting rifle.

Re: Remington 700VS reports

My Remington 700 VLS in .223 has seen duty at 200 and 600 yard matches. My lady shot very well (Expert) at 600 with the rifle. We weren't competitive as those "F" class 600 yard folks all shoot perfect scores at 600 and the "X" count determines the winner. The rifle did a terrific job, though.

The barrel twist is 1:12 so the bullet selection is limited to light projectiles. We use 55 grain slugs and the rifle loves them! We shoot prone from a bipod.

I shot High Master at 200 and Master at 600. I bought a Timney trigger for the rifle but have not installed it yet.

All things considered, the Rifle was fairly expensive but worth every penny. The laminated stock is a beautiful thing.

Re: Remington 700VS reports

I have 2 700 VS rifles in .22-250 and .308. Both are the older style with non-fluted heavy barrels and reinforced stocks. I think the .22-250 is from the first year of the J-lock on the bolt. The .308 is was purchased a year or two after the .22-250. Unfortunately they don't make the VS in this configuration anymore. The .308 is unfired and sitting in the safe so I can't speak to its accuracy. The .22-250 is able to out shoot me all day long. When I was spending a lot of time behind the trigger I was able to hit push pins at 250 yards on a regular basis. I have shot ground hogs with it out to about 450 yards on occasion. The VS models have changed somewhat from year to year with the barrel and stock configurations. Both stocks on mine are dark gray almost black with the light gray fiberglass reenforceing visible.

Re: Remington 700VS reports

I've been shooting my VS in 308 for years. It looks like a PSS now as I changed the stock. Earlier somebody said that his shot better dirty......same scenario here. I mainly shoot American Eagle 'cause its cheap, and it routinely puts them into an inch at 100 yards. Great gun. You're gonna like it.

Re: Remington 700VS reports

Finally got to shoot some of my test loads. 168 SMK's shot best with RL15, and H4895. Both produced several groups .50" or less. A couple in the 2's and 3's. I really wanted it to shoot the 190SMK but the 12 twist barrel did not seem to like them. I am still gonna work with them since I have several more in the box. Anybody else have a 12 twist that likes the 190's? I would like to steal some recipes from you. I loaded the 190's with H489, and H4064 and had little success. They shot right around 1". This is not acceptable out of this gun for me. I think it should shootthem much better.
