I just picked up a remington 721 for my next project build and just wanted to know if the reciver foot print is the same as a 700 long action? I havn't had a chance to take the stock off and check it out yet. This is my first long action so I don't have a spare stock laying around. If anybody has any positive information it would be greatly appreciated..

The basic foot print is the same as the 700. The issue you will have is using a 700 trigger with 700 style safety lever on the 721 receiver. The tang of the 721 is not cut for a side safety lever but can be altered if need be. The 721 safety lever sets lower and to the side of the tang so a stock inletted for a 700 would need to have material removed behind bolt cut out for 721 safety lever to clear.

Also the 721 uses a snap in extractor which is pretty hard to find anymore. (I just happen to have obtained 4 from an estate

). If you have extractor issues and cannot find the factory extractor it would have to be milled for a Sako type.

Oh, almost forgot, the rear bridge height of the 721 is lower than the "current production" 700's. Current production bases may have to be shimmed because of the .017 difference. (key word is "current production"). A 20moa rail would set lower in the rear and you would not actually gain 20moa because of it. 2pc bases are a bigger issue and you need to make sure things align so you don't twist/torque/bind scope tube when installing.

Otherwise everything is pretty much same same.
