I have the opportunity to buy a Remington Sportsman 78 in 30-06. I have been researching to find out if it is in deed the 700 in less appealing attire. From what I understand these were made from late 70's to early 80's as part of the Sportsman models as less expensive firearms pre-ADL and the best I found for an answer is everything works between the two actions or this is the "poor mans 700". Before I buy it and pay the money to send it off for truing and re-barrel, can anyone tell me 100% that this is in fact a 700 action just not as pretty and shiny. I know it has a birch stock instead of walnut also.

I have a Sportsman 78 chambered in .30/06 as well. Everything is 700 ADL, only uglier. The original wood stock was as pretty as a fence post. I replaced it in 1991 with a new Remington synthetic stock that I glass bedded. It's a natural born killer and will shoot groups ( Yes, 3 Shots - its a hunting weight barrel ) less than an inch with hand loads.
