I have a question please bear with me I'm in jaxsonville fl looking at order / buying Remington 700 and I'm on my iPhone. The tactal 20 inch has a 1:10 twist the varment 26 28 inch barrel has 1:12 twist. What's advantages or dis. Thank u for ur help going to grab bite before I buy so I can get better knolage before I buy

Respectfully

Re: Remington barrel twist

a 10 twist can stabilize the heavier bullets. although, with a 308 that is usually not an issue becasue a 12 twist will stabilize 175s just fine in most cases.

is the 20" an sps tactical or a 5r?
The sps tactical and sps varmint have crappy stocks that you will likely want to replace. both will shoot well.

barrel length is preference, in 308, you dont need anything longer than 22-24" but it is not bad, the remington varmints shoot well with 26"

Re: Remington barrel twist

thank you dicks sporting goods has the 700 varmint on sale for 499.99 that's a savings of 220-250 where im at over the tactical im considering it

does McCrees give discount for hide members?

Re: Remington barrel twist

The 12 twist should handle up to 190 grain Sierra's and the Berger 185BT's and the new 185gr Hybrid bullets. Also the newer 155's shoot better in the 12 twist bbl as well.

Re: Remington barrel twist

so im trying to understand this and it sounds like to me, the lighter grains are more responsive to the 12 twist instead of the 10 twist? but wont the lighter grain be unstable at 500 yrds+?? trying to understand all this

Re: Remington barrel twist

Cowboy1978, you got it, lighter for 1 in 12, heavier for 1 in 10. As for more unstable, hell no, of a lot of shooters are using, 155 in 308's either Scenars, Bergers or SMKS's. A great round when you get it going fast enough and still a line favourite at 1000 yards.

Re: Remington barrel twist

I dont know, if you can stay away from the guns at dicks. I bout one in 223 and wished I didnt... The stock is just plain junk! Mine was warped, no matter how much I tried to shave it down it just kept twisting to the left and rubbing the barrel. No xmark pro trigger and the action is gritty. If you can swing the extra cash buy a tactical 700 or a savage 10fp. Good luck

the varmint model is a no-free float and no bedded, ill be ordering a McRees stock for it weather i get the tactical or the varmint a McRees or AICS will be the stock, but i agree some ties you get what you pay for

I did have a savage 10 but i couldn't find any good stocks, and it was a good buy my uncle grabbed it for what i paid but a sweet gun none the less

Re: Remington barrel twist

If your looking at a good base model Remington 308, one you can land and expand, go look at the 700 ACC SD. This is a 20 inch with a 1:10 and it's pre threaded for a can. All you have to do is throw glass on it and go to town. Then you can change the trigger and stock when you get the cash. PM me and I'll send you some pics.

Re: Remington barrel twist

I have the AAC, and love it so far!! I am saving my nickels and dimes for a McM stock and some bottom metal. The Kahles glass ought to do for now.

Re: Remington barrel twist

Remington SPS Tac- 20" barrel twist 1:12

Remington SPS Tac AAC-SD - 20" Barrel twist 1:10

Remington 5R- 20" or 24" barrels twist 1:11.2

Remington SPS Varmint - 26" barrel twist 1:12

Remington Police Model - 26" barrel twist 1:12

I would go with the 1:10 twist if I had to choose again. When I got my SPS Tac .308 the AAC-SD version was not out yet. My 1:12 does fine with the 175 SMK bullets but any heavier they will not stabilize good enough.
