Question for all that are knowledable of Remington 700's. Other than the visual differences between stainless, blued, parkerized, etc., heavy contour vs sporter, triangular vs round vs fluted; are there any REAL differences internally or in manufacturing that makes one barrel better than another (setting aside the 5r as a departure from standard Remington production)?

WOW! first time I have seen 74 people on this forum speechless!!

OK, quality of lands/grooves on all Remington barrels essentially the same or are there different levels of quality between models?

    Re: Remington Barrels

Most, if not all, remington factory tubes are hammer forged.

They are factory barrels, what else do you want to know. The vast majority of remington tubes are very decent, some are quite good and occasionally they put out a total piece of shit.

The custom shop barrels, I believe, are cut rifled.

Thanks fdkay, I guess I want to verify that I would be better off buying an SPS Varmint and adding a good McMillan or Manners stock for the same money as buying a VS SF II, if my end goal was to buy the most accuracy for the same amount of money.

I think you support the belief that all Remington barrels are created equal.

    Re: Remington Barrels

To my knowledge all Remington factory barrels are hammer forged. As previously stated they can be quite good to a turd. What factors contribute to this:

    1) Initial quality of mandrel
    2) Condition of the mandrel (how many barrels has it put out)
    3) Condition and process control of hammer forge
    4) Consistency of barrel steel
    5) Stress relieving

Any one of these factors out of spec could result in a turd...... done thousands of times a day.

Sure, *SOME* rem tubes shoot nice, but that borescope video is infallable proof that just about any aftermarket tube is leaps and bounds better.

    Re: Remington Barrels

So I get it that it's a mixed bag when it comes to Remington factory barrels. At best they are good factory barrels and at worst the pitts. Just verifying that no one knows of any quality test where barrels are sorted and the "good" ones go to one model while the "bad" ones go to a lower cost model.

    Re: Remington Barrels

Nope, Remington makes a very good factory product and they do a pretty good job with overall quality control. But as others have mentioned they are miles away from a custom barrel.

I don't know that any of the production rifles are individually accuracy tested. I know they are test fired, but I don't know if it's a proof load or just a standard load.

I know that personally I have not seen a quantifiable accuracy difference between the low price actions and the Police Models when they are set in the same quality of stock and fed the same level of ammo. Additionally I have not seen any information to indicated the there is any barrel grading done prior to assembly.

    Re: Remington Barrels

Looks can be deceiving, especially with borescopes. I've seen rough bores do .5 and slick ones do 1moa.

The difference between a factory barrel and a custom barrel is 15 minutes and one half.

15 minutes less clean up for the custom barrel

The one half is generally said as... my factory remington can do sub moa all day long where a custom guy says his does under a half moa all day long.

    Good Luck

Very telling video. Thanks for posting. When a factory rifle outshoots my custom guns, look for falling pigshit because pigs will defintiely be flying.

When all else fails, the target has the final word on if the barrel shoots or not.
