For the Remington experts, my bolt stop pin on my 700 (.308) is broken. It sheared at the bolt stop bracket, the trigger if fine; I notice the problem after a round of shooting. Rifle was not feeding rounds as it should, I took the rifle apart and that was the problem that I found. My questions are: is this a weak area on the 700’s and should I upgrade to G.A. Precision Bolt stop/release Mod. This rifle was built back in 2005 by a smith from the Carson City, Nevada area and he is no longer in the business due to age and health. The rifle is a shooter, other than a too tight of a chamber when I first get her back from the smith it has been problem free, I have over 1500 rounds down the tube.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks

Re: Remington Bolt Stop Broken

I am leaning towards just changing the pin and just letting things go at that. The pin broke when I was home on leave, I should have taken pictures then. It will be some time before I will be back in the states again. I think if you get too aggressive on bolt manipulation you can weaken and eventually break the pin.

Re: Remington Bolt Stop Broken

I will copy your post and email him (Lyle Wheelock) to see if they have been any other problems...who knows they might send you one to replace the broken one.

I have never had a problem with the pin breaking and our department rifles have never had this problem.

And just so I'm on the same page, is this the pin that you are talking about?

Re: Remington Bolt Stop Broken

Hey guys, I just heard back from Lyle here is his reply:

"Do either of these guns have an oversize bolt handle? This pin can only be broken if the bolt is jammed to the rear tooooo hard, it is a bolt stop not a battering ram stop. And yes I have seen it before but it was caused by the shooter and not a defect in the design."

I don't know if this helps any, but I tried.
