I'm obviously not a gunsmith but had some work done recently and was trying to understand a few things. When truing a Remington 700 bolt, is only the bolt face squared up or does the end of the bolt get any truing as well? I just had my bolt and action trued and was wondering about this when looking at the bolt and I couldn't see any machine marks on the end of the bolt, or couldn't really see anything on the face either. On another bolt that also had a Sako extractor installed, I could see machine marks on the end of the bolt in that a little was taken off. The only way I could tell the first bolt mentioned had anything done to it was seeing some lapping compond on the lugs.
Second question. I put the bolt minus the firing pin assembly into the receiver and was surprised to see there was about 1.5-2mm of play back and forth. Is that typical? Does the cocking piece provide the pull back to set the lugs back against the receiver?
Third question. Does the bolt truing get taken into account when the chamber is cut or is there not enough taken off the face and lugs to make enough of a difference? Thanks. Rich
